How to give objects some visually rich icons in viewport

I want to create level editing tools and i need some visually rich icon to easely recognize different placed objects.

I'm actually using simpleobject2 derived objects with hardcoded mesh but i'm not so happy with it.

One feature i really like is to have those icons or shapes to follow camera like billboards as reactor tools icons does.

Can someone put me in the right direction about how to assign some modeled mesh always facing cameras like reactor does?

i have also thinked about textured polygons but they doesn't face camera and they will become simple quads in wireframe views.

I'm open to other solution.
