* Other than the crash I have a quick workflow question:

In my file I have Hair outputting from a mesh surface, after I add "Mesh from strands" and then convert it back to guides, it asks me to "ground strands" onto a mesh surface. I am forced to copy the object remove all the hair modifiers and provide it with the same base mesh to apply the grounding on. Is there a better way in the future to simply tell Ornatrix to Ground the strands on the same mesh it is being outputted from? Instead of creating another base mesh?.

Thank you,

(sorry if there is a double post, I wasn't sure if the message was posted with the upload).

Steps to Reproduce:

To reproducce the crash"

Simply try to ground the strands after mesh strands modifier, either by "ground strands" or by the default grounding option within the "guides from guide mesh".

Both options are crashing Max in this setup.

Hi Vincit,

It looks like you forgot to add the file, please reupload it. I tried it here with fur on a sphere in a clean scene but I don't get any crash. Please share the scene.

"I am forced to copy the object remove all the hair modifiers and provide it with the same base mesh to apply the grounding on."

This is not necessary. Are you going through this procedure because of the crash?

Hi Jeordanis, Thank you for the quick reply!

Sorry I thought I had the file attached, here it is.

Regarding the crash no it's simply crashing every time I try to ground and has nothing to do with the workflow I was asking about.

* Regarding the workflow question, I was wondering then how can I get Guides again from the mesh strands if it is not necessary to ground it first? Because it seems I am unable to get them otherwise, unless there is a step I missed.

Best,

Just a follow up reply, I'm not sure if you received the steps I wrote to reproduce the crash, it's not showing here in the post. Just in case you didn't, here are the steps again:

 - Simply Ground strands either by "Guides form guide mesh" or by using ground modifier and this should crash max.

Thanks

Sorry yet another follow up message, for the record it ssems to crash on this specific setup only.

It is not crashing on my other setups. This setup is the only one with guides emmiting directly from the surface, all my other setups have custom splines converted to guides and then manually grounded on a surface (which work fine and caused no crashed). Not sure if this helps to narrow down on the issue.

Hi,

Update on this:

Seems like the culprit has something to do with "Remember roots" being on the hair modifier, I added Mesh from strands setup after I created the hair which had "Remember" on.

I deleted the hair modifier and put a new one and then applied "Remember Roots" again, Seems to work fine now without crashes so far.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Hi Vincit, sorry for the delay.

I can reproduce the crash now. As I said in the other post, we are looking into this.

About your workflow question:

You can also convert the mesh back to hair using Hair from Mesh Strips, but you will have to ground them again using Ground Strands. Guides from Guide Mesh it's better in this case, just way a few days until the team fixes the crash.
