Description:

Maya 2018.6
Ornatrix for Maya v2.5.2.23231
Redshift 2.6.54

Hello

I have read all other posts regarding this subject (low poly, high poly, Smooth Mesh etc) and have experimented with the multiple work arounds with success regarding how hairs react to base geometry subdivision.   My current work around is what you have described (multiple times).

'Bake the system and attach the hairs grown from the subdivided geometry to the cage mesh with a ground strands node.'

This works but since we are rendering a cage mesh with Redshift Tesselation (not Smooth Mesh Preview) I'm just wanting to verify if what I'm seeing is what Ornatrix intended (Steps to produce are below).

After reading the other posts, I am not expecting smooth mesh preview to affect how the hairs align with the subdvided base mesh at render time (although that is a primary workflow issue since many assets are cages until rendertime - Subdivided using smooth mesh).    I would however expect the hairs to follow the tesselated geometry when Redshift tesselation is used but this is not the case.

Steps to Reproduce:

Create Cube.
Create Guides from Mesh and Hair from guides.
Adjust length and width.

Turn on Redshift Tesselation for the cube.

Render.

It will render the hairs following the cube shape but the tesselated geometry will be a sphere.
This is where I would expect the hair positions to conform to the tesselated sphere in the render since the geometry was updated.  Just wanted to make sure I have the workflow down and that I'm not missing a checkbox somewhere.

Best,

Don

Hi Don,

Sorry for the delay. What you describe is expected. In the next major version Ornatrix will include the Smooth Surface modifier that will allow you to subdivide the roots according to the surface subdivisions. This modifier can already be found in Ornatrix V7 beta.
