Problem

Description:

Hi, I used the SurfaceComb modifier to style hair in 3dsmax. My problem is that some of the hair guides changing direction during the animation. It seems to me that the guides I`ve problem with are taking the direction from more than one sink. The "root" sink is probably changing when animated body with sinks is moving.

I tried to add much more sinks, but the new problematic spots "between sinks"  was formed. They`re smaller, but they exist and the guides are still moving there.

The thing is clear from this image

Have you any idea how to fix this please? Thanks, Petr

Steps to Reproduce:

Hi Petr,

I have to double check but I believe this is expected. For now, if you are done tweaking the sinks, the best way is to bake them. Video here.

Hi Jeordanis,

Thanks for your reply. I have no the button "bake modifiers" in my Ornatrix 7.2.6.28492 as it`s shown in video you posted. And I wanted to preserve the procedurality of the fur too.

I solved it with this two steps:

-adding much more sinks and change their direction for better flow from each to other. Result is not so interesting, but it helped.

-I switched the "Algorithm" from "Triangulation" to "Mesh Vertex" at "Surface Comb Settings"

Hope this informations can help you find the problem.

But I got the next problem with this fur. I`ve got the "Remember roots" buttons turn ON, but everytime I open the scene and render it, the fur is wrong. The only thing I found that helpes is to turn OFF and ON theese buttons after opening the scene (I`m doing this at frame 0, where the object is in base pose and was styled there). It works but it`s complicated as the model have 4 ornatrix meshes on it and a lot of shots need to be rendered from the scene. And the worst thing is that I will need to render it on external renderfarm, where I will not be able to turn OFF and ON "Remember Roots" buttons after opening the scene, before the render starts. My today`s test shown that renders I`ve got from renderfarm aren`t OK.

Regarding the bake option in the menu, maybe your tool bar and menu are a left over from a previous installation. Please follow these steps to reinstall the toolbar and menu(Adding and removing the toolbar).

In this case, the flickering and defects caused by Surface Comb are expected, especially with the new triangulation algorithm(Triangulation). The only solution is baking the modifier after you are done with it. Maybe you can have a separate version of the project, or a reference so you keep the original and bake the modifier in the final result.

The problem with Remember Root Positions sounds like a bug. Please provide us with a simplified version of your scene for testing. You can send it to jeordanis .f (at) ephere.com. Add a link to this post in the email.
