Problem

Description:

3Ds Max 2015 always crashes when going through frames, if the scene contains two objects with Ornatrix hair, a light and one of the objects with ox hair is selected.

Steps to Reproduce:

3Ds Max 2015 will crash with Ornatrix if you do the following steps:

1. Create Plane001 and Plane002.

2. Apply to each plane Ox Guides From Surface (with root count 100 or less) and Ox Hair From Guides (with view count 200 or less).

3. Create Target spot light.

4. Select plane002 in the Perspective viewport. Move one frame forward a couple of times - 3Ds Max will stop responding and crash before you reach frame #5. Random clicks on the timeline will end the same way.

p.s.: I'm using Nitrous (Direct3D 11.0) viewport driver. 3Ds Max 2014 doesn't crash with the same scene and settings.

Thank you for the consice steps. I just tried it here and couldn't reproduce. I will try a few other scenarios. It could be a graphics driver issue of some sort, hard to say.

Which version of Ornatrix are you using? Also, if you open Ornatrix settings dialog (or type OrnaAbout() in the listener) and uncheck the Nitrous hair display option does the crash still reproduce?

I also gave this a try with no crash. Could you upload a scene that crashses like this for you. Then we can be sure everthing is the same.

Thank you Marsel. Any of your suggestions prevents the crash - changing to Legacy 3D driver for the viewport or Unchecking the Polygon viewport hair in the Ornatrix settings. I'm using Ornatrix 3.1.0.7

Use the attached scene (first select Plane002 and then change the current frame few times) for test.

Just tried the scene here with both 3.1.0.7 and 3.1.0.9 and couldn't reproduce the crash. I also tried with and without viewport degradation on.

Thank you for the fast response. Unfortunately it keeps happening here on other machines too. I hope the video will help.

Odd, I just tried the exact steps as in the video and all works OK on this end. I will try to think of something to reproduce this. Maybe, worst case I can send you PDB files to try and catch the line where the issue occurs?

Yes if this will help you.

Can you please let me know which email I should send the file to? Thank you.

You can send the files to yavor.rubenov@chaosgroup.com
