I am not 100% sure that I am doing the workflow correct so I thought I should check here. I am setting up a groom on an animated mesh. The groom is good. Then I add a moov modifier set it up. Everything is fine. I then add a cache animation mod and bake the sim. Everything looks fine as it bakes. When it is done, I disable the moov mod and instantly the hair goes crazy in the cache. (Like the hair indices are all mixed up or something) it plays down fine, just scrambled. If I don’t disable the moov mod, as soon as I scrub, Max crashes. my hair count in the viewport is set to the same as render. Where am I going wrong? Max 2018, ornatrix 6 nightly from a couple of days ago. Thanks for any help anyone can offer. |
I have gotten back onto this problem this morning. I noticed that curiously when I re-opened my saved scene, the cache is now displaying correctly! The crash behaviour is still there, but at least I have somewhat of a workaround. Every time I run a new sim, I can reload the scene to see what it looks like. [EDIT] Looks like I spoke too soon. Hitting render seems to re-scramble the cache. I've attached some screenshots of before and after and also my mod stack.
Hi, Thank you for reporting this, I'm looking into it. I will be back to you soon. Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
Thanks for looking into this. In case it is useful, I have attached a scene file.
Any luck with this one? I've got some shots to deliver and I can't complete them until I can get the caching working.
Hello, Sorry for the delay. I wasn't able to reproduce this bug, only a crash that happens with Moov which the team is already fixing. Can you please try the latest nightly? Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
This is how the simulation looks to me: Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
But the hair getting an afro look seems to be part of the simulation because the same happens on moov. Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
That looks correct! Maybe I got a bad nightly build. I will update and test again. The afro is intended :D
| I have installed the nightly from 5 hours ago. I recorded a new cache, and then as soon as I turn off the moov modifier it goes scrambled again. You can see in the attached screenshot what mine looks like. Your GIF looks correct. I wionder, can you send me your good cache file? That will let me know if the problem is in the reading or the writing of the cache. As a separate matter, can you try something for me? Load the scene, with the moov modifier active, click on the last frame. It will ask you if you want to compute 127 frames or something. If I say no, Max crashes. Thanks for your continued assistance. | I just realised, I should send you my hair cache. Let me know if it looks ok on your end. See attached. |
Just now I noticed the "Overwrite input" switch. Checking that makes it work!
| Arghh!! Once again I spoke too soon. When I pressed render I get this exception: File: \ephere\plugins\autodesk\max\ornatrix\private\hair.cpp Line: 2890 Function: Ephere::Plugins::Autodesk::Max::Ornatrix::Hair::GetSurfaceDependency__deprecated Expression: Assert failed

Poke... Would be good to get a response. I'm at the point where I need to rebuild the shot in Houdini if I can't get it to work.
Hi Dubbie, Sorry for the late reply, I'm away from office but I will try what you suggested once I get there today. Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
I was able to reproduce this bug after recording the cache several times. The team will be looking into this with high priority, I will keep you posted. Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
