Braid Dillema

We've been working on creating hair to work with the new hair simulation inside UE4 and it's been great to work with but we've been struggling with braids. It seems that there is a defined tutorial process for Maya including files with breakdowns but the equivalent for 3DS Max doesn't exist.

We've tried replicating the Maya tutorial inside Max but it doesn't seem to be that simple. ox Mesh From Strands seems to not work the same when trying to add a Braid Guide along a Hair Guide, sometimes just giving an error and not working at all. Trying to form a Braid inside ox Edit Guides doesn't work either, adjusting any of the sliders just seems to scale the mesh in odd ways.

A solution we've ended up with is to have 3 Hair Guides running parallel with an ox Clump modifier and loading the Braid Guide through that, but even that is temperamental and often doesn't replicate the Braid Guide 1:1 (i.e making 2 hair clumps to form a twist, rather than 3 to form a braid). After this we're using ox Strand Multiplier and then an Edit Guides to manually form it back into place. Is this an appropriate solution or could you point us to documentation for the correct one? Thanks!

Hello,

We've tried replicating the Maya tutorial inside Max but it doesn't seem to be that simple. ox Mesh From Strands seems to not work the same when trying to add a Braid Guide along a Hair Guide, sometimes just giving an error and not working at all.

Please describe the errors and issues that you are getting with Mesh from Strands.

Trying to form a Braid inside ox Edit Guides doesn't work either, adjusting any of the sliders just seems to scale the mesh in odd ways.

Those tools have been deprecated and they will be removed soon. They should not be used.

Have you tried using clump patterns? Create a braid using the Braid object and include it as a clump pattern inside the Clump modifier.

Hey Jeordanis,

A few times I've just had an error and Ornatrix has crashed, but most commonly once I add an ox Edit Guides onto my hair guide that is using the Braid Guide as a proxy object the guides become invisible

yeah I ended up using a clump pattern but as described above it often doesnt accurately represent the braid guide like in the below example

Hi,

The team was able to identify the crash which is caused by Hair from Mesh Strips and Mesh from Strands. A fix is in the works. I will keep you posted.

Can you show me a comparison of how the braid looks with clump patterns VS the expected results?

This crash has been fixed in the latest nightly build. pelase give it a try.

Awesome, thanks Jeordanis! Sorry for the late reply. Here's a few screenshots.

The circle surrounding the head is the Braid Guide that I'm using for this braid. I started with one hair guide and multiplied it

Strange, the images didnt come through above. I'll try again.

In the 3rd image I also tried with a fresh Braid Guide and fresh ox Clump modifier and this is what I ended up with (ox Clump is using External Clump Strands and the Clump is also loaded into Global Pattern Objects)
