Alembic import interference

Maybe a stupid question but Ornatrix keeps interfering when I want to import an alembic file that isn't used with Ornatrix.

I'm trying to import animated clothes from Clo3d for animation, Ornatrix keeps pulling it in the alembic modifier.

Can I overide this or something?

hi,

i had the same problem. i solved it selecting the Alembic file format from the dropdown menu before importing the object. or u can also create the alembic from the 3dsmax create panel and then load the abc from the modifier tab

Exactly. As Matteo said, you just have to change the file type when importing.

Thanks, both worked for me.

Hello, we've discovered thsi issue too. Whilst yes, it can be remedied by the steps above, I feel it is undesirable behaviour you have added to Max. If I use the importer to import an Alembic, I want it to default to bringing that in as an Alembic, and not as an Orantrix Alembic. Importing something as an Ornatrix Alembic should be the exception and not the rule. Can this be changed for a future release please? Thanks very much.

Hi,

I totally agree. However, we do not have any control over this. It just happens that Ornatrix Alembic is the last file type added to the list.

I will double check with the team to see if we can actually do something to prevent this.

Hi Jeordanis,

Thanks for looking into it. This may be something your team needs to discuss with Autodesk, but I can't imagine it's impossible to fix! Thanks very much.

Hi,

We discussed this again internally and we determined that it is not an interference. You just need to switch the file type to be imported in the import dialog from Ornatrix Alembic to Ornatrix.

Hi,

Apologies, didn't see that you'd replied again to this and then I've been on leave.

I am confused how you have determined that this is not an interference, when I, a user, am telling you that it is? Yes, switching file types gets past the problem, but the point is that we as users shouldn't have to do that. Ornatrix Alembic is the exception, not the norm. The norm is standard Alembic and that should be the default version of Alembic used by File>Import. I should have to switch to Ornatrix Alembic only when I want that specifically, which is occasionally, I shouldn't have to switch away from it every other time. That's poor UX.

Is just how 3ds Max work. Is not something that we do on purpose. Ornatrix Alembic plugin gets loaded later so it is added later by 3ds Max to the file type list.

Is not an interference because is just another item on the file type list, which you can change at any time.

It's an interference because it's an undesired behaviour. I've explained why it shouldn't work like that, but if there's no way for you to alter the placement in the Max file type list, then I understand.

I realise that yes, the file type list can be changed by the user at any time, but the point is they shouldn't have to.
