How do you tell if Tangent Normals is working in Mesh From Strands?

Using Vray, my tangent normal looks identical to my normals render.  My workflow is:

For Direction Map:
- Pris/Cyl selected, Tangent Normals checked, Mesh From Strands ON and VRayOrnatrixMod OFF

For Normals Map:
- Mesh From Strands OFF and VRayOrnatrixMod ON

Following the tutorials on YouTube, the instructors normal renders using Vray look a bit different...they are sort of darker or green.  They look different then the normals render, I can't get mine to look like that...I'm wondering if Tanget Normals is not working for me using 3dsmax 2016 sp3.

Hello,

Which tutorial are you following? It is one of ours? Please link it here for context.

Hi,

Yes, it was yours.  Here's the link:

I also followed both of these:

I thnk I got it working.  The tutorials teach set strands to priz/cyl...this did not work for me...I had to set to flat bilboard with tanget normals set.  Also, if using random by strand index in vray mtl, there is a wierd artifact that only affects the RGB...but doesn't affect the normal which I think is the correct tanget normal for the the flow map...to get rid of the artifact, turn off mesh from strands and render rgb, normals, diffuse filter etc.  Hope this helps someone stuggling with the same issue.  Not sure if the flow map is correct but at this point, it looks different then the normal map and more similiar to the tutorials.  One more things, save to .tga with overide set to 1.0 to get proper exposure...that tip was in the charlytutorials.
