Is there a Shader in Maya that supports a color map to drive spline color that also has specular? Currently the only shader I've found works w/ a color map on my groom is the aiStandardHair but it has no specular in viewport.
Maybe you can try the Hair Physical Shader or the Hair Tube Shader. Make sure to enable Camera-facing Normals and the hair shape.

Don't think I can plug in a diffuse map to drive the groom w/ those shaders.
Ah you want to see the texture in the viewport. I think that is up to the shader.
