Hi, I'm actually using Ox Strand Propagation to make some very detailed feathers. So far so good. But the propagated strands point straight from the main strand: is there any way to make them bend or have some sort of curve? I tried with assigning a specific group id and Ox Strand Gravity but the result is not what I'm looking for (maybe I'm using it in the wrong way). The gravity point all the strands in a specific direction, but I need them to bend relative to the main central strand. See attached images (the sketch is what I'm looking for, see arrows, and the rendered one is the current feathers I obtained). Thank you Attached Files: |
I watched the Maya Creating a Procedural Feather tutorial on Epher YT Channel, trying to bring the same settings to my 3ds max scene, using Curling modifier instead of Gravity. But after a lot of changes in the parameters of phase, phase offset, and axis I cant obtain the same result. I can only achieve to get one side to go up and the other to go down (see attached sketch; in fact if I twist the propagation 2-side strands they finally match, it's like one side is rotated but not mirrored/flipped), if I can explain myself correctly. I attach also a rendered image and a screen grab of the modifier stack, maybe you can undestand better what I'm doing (I also added some clumping to the propagated strands group). The Rotate Strands modifier is needed to make the feathers parallel and not perpendicular to the mesh geo, maybe the problems comes from that? The Curl modifier is set to Z axis (is X in the tutorial) but with Z I obtain the best results (X is totally wrong in my scene setup). Thank you.
I forgot to ask you a question: as you can see in the 3ds max screeb grab, in the lower left shaded view, half of the feather is shaded white, while the other half is shaded black: what does this mean? Is this maybe a clue for resolving my issue? Thank you
Hi. Try making two strand groups for each side of the feather and use two Curl modifiers to bend each side individually. The shading difference that you see in the viewport is just the normals of the strands. That just means that the normals of the strands on one side of the feathers are pointing in the opposite direction. That wont affect the render and is not related to your question. You can change this by increasing the facing camera hairs in the Ornatrix settings(Ornatrix tool bar). Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
Thank you Jeordanis, I will try the method you suggest and I will post the results here.
