3ds max to Unreal Engine 5

I am trying to get the groom out of 3ds max into UE5, I can get part of the way there by exporting to ornatrix alembic and import, but the groom appears very thin, not dense. I have been messing with settings for hours but nothing bulks up the thickness.
I saw this tutorial on Youtube by you guys but the saved format is different to the one in the video. in the video it's usda, when i do it, it's .oxg.yaml

Best practice?

Thanks

Hi!

In Max, select the Ox Hair From Guides modifier and scroll down to 'Dense Hair Settings'.  Second section there says 'Export Object Type'.  Click on 'Hair'.  It will depress like it was clicked but not turn colors or anything.  From here on out, when you export the Ornatrix Alembic file(.abc), it will export the Hair strands and you will have the full groom.  Import the .abc file into Unreal and it will make a groom object with all the hairs.  Good luck from there adjusting the settings of the groom and lighting and project settings and post process settings to get it to look even half right at 14fps. :D

To export Ornatrix grooms from 3ds Max to UE5 with proper density, use the USD (.usda) format instead of Alembic or .oxg.yaml, as UE5 supports native groom assets via USD better. If you're getting a .oxg.yaml file, ensure you're using the USD Export plugin in Ornatrix, not just the build now gg preset or scene save options.

To fix the thin groom issue, focus on enabling Unreal Engine 4 Export, Export Widths, and Export Strand Data in the Ornatrix Alembic export settings,  and increase Strand Multiplier and Strand Width in 3ds Max. Use Alembic (.abc) instead of .oxg.yaml, as the latter is not compatible with UE5. In UE5, tweak Width Scale and Density Scale and ensure proper material setup. If issues persist, verify the export by importing into Blender or 3ds Max, geometry dash lite and check UE5’s import logs for errors.

For exporting groom from 3ds Max to UE5, the .oxg.yaml format from Ornatrix is the current standard, replacing older .usda files. To get thicker, denser hair in UE5, try adjusting the 'Hair Count' and 'Hair Width' settings in the Groom Importer and Crazy Cattle 3D also increase the hair density in Ornatrix before export.
