Distribution Maps

Hi guys,

Im looking for some help, I've got a full body mesh but I only want hair on the scalp area. I have created a distribution map for the scalp area, which works correctly by only growing guides from this area. The only problem is that there are only a few guides visible (about 10 out of 300), as if the other 290 are still distributed across the rest of the mesh but hidden. I have to put my guide count up to 20k to get a reasonable amount of guides to work with. The problem re-occurs when I add 'ox hair from guides' modifier, I only get about 10 visible guides and cant see any hairs until I render.

Am I missing something?

Cheers!

Hi Gareth,

The current hair distribution algorithm works by the process of elimination. That is, it uses the probability from the distribution map to randomly ommit a certain percentage of hairs. Thus, if you use the map, it will end up planting less hairs/guides than specified. And if the map ommits a lot of hairs then that number will be even lower. If it isn't a huge problem, bump up the number of guides until you get the appropriate count, or make the distribution map blacker.

Cheers
