Setup & Render Ornatrix Hair with Mental Ray

Hi

I have been trying to get Mental Ray to seamlessly render Ornatrix hair without errors in the Diagnostics window.  I have managed to get Mental Ray to render Ornatrix hair as described, by assigning the MRHair primitive and Ox Hair Draw effect.  However I keep getting a message appearing that states the following:

PHEN 0.4    112 MB error  051011: shader "ox_geo_hair" not found

I have found the ox_geo_hair shader but do not understand how to assign it to prevent the error occuring.  Can you explain what each of the Mental Ray based Ornatrix shaders do and how best to setup a shader network for Mental Ray which emulates the Ox Expensive Hair standard shader

Hello,

This could be an install or a scene setup issue. Please make sure you have the latest build installed and if you could post a simple scene (sphere with hair) that gives you this error, I will take a look and see if there is an issue with your setup.

Thanks

Micheal McCarthy

Hi

Thanks for the fast reply.  I have created the scene in the images posted on a completely new session of 3DS Max 2015.  It is a simple primitive sphere with Ornatrix hair assigned.  I have used Standard lights with Ox Hair Shadows assigned and MRHair primitive is placed in the scene with the hair assigned to it as 'Source Hair'.  I have also setup Ox Hair Draw effect to supply the hair thickness and profile.

Am I missing something, as I still get the error message for ox_geo_hair not found.  I also noticed the OrnaMR.dll was unable to load on startup of 3DS Max.  I am currently using the latest version of Ornatrix V2.5.8.0.  Hope you can help.

On another note could you also explain which shader network and shadow types for lights works best for Ornatrix hair in Mental Ray.  I would like to get the same quality as the Ornatrix standard shader, light shadows and buffer renderer provide but with Mental Ray so compositing is easier and more accurate in regards to lighting and shadows between objects and hair at the post production compositing stage.

Other than answering my previous post I was wonder whether you knew how to set up the Puppet P_HairTK shader to render with Ornatrix hair in Mental Ray.  I have tried and cannot get it to show as material on hair in a render.  It would be good if I could get P_HairTK to work as this would be a good solution for Mental Ray to render Ornatrix hair with Mental Ray.

Hi

I have also uploaded a simple scene file for you to have a look at.  I have tried assigning both Puppet 'P HairTK' and standard Mental Ray shaders, but no hair is evident in the render with only a error message to show for all my effort stating ox_geo_hair not found?

Please help

I really want to use Mental Ray to render Ornatrix hair if possible?

regards

Brendan

Hi

I have just read the Mental Ray section of the documentation again to see if I have missed anything and still no luck.  I have check for the OrnaMR shader files and .mi file modifications in the 3rd Part Shader folders of 3DS Max install.  All is in place and I have restarted the scene again with no luck.

1. How do I get Mental Ray to render Ornatrix Hair?

2. What shaders/materials can I assign to Ornatrix Hair for rendering in Mental Ray?

3. I have assigned the OrnaMR object to the scene and assigned the Hair to it but still no luck in render with Mental Ray.  The only way I can get any representation of hair on Mental Ray render is as a post render effect with Ox Hair Draw.  Ox Hair Draw is an effect not rendered as part of Mental Ray so how can I truely set up Ornatrix to render in Mental Ray?

I have check and tried every avenue of possibility and still no luck. What am I doing wrong or is likely to be an error with the software on Windows 8.1?

I have tried a few different versions of Ornatrix now from 2.5.7.0 to 2.5.8.0 to the latest version of Ornatrix V3 beta. and none of them allow me currently to render hair in Mental Ray.

Please help

Brendan

Howdy,

This should be pretty easy to setup.

1. Create some basic hair using Add Hair to Selection or manually

2. Create an MR Hair object

3. Choose the OXhair object you created in #1 from the MR Hair Modify panel.

4. Render with MR. You can optionally use a OX Render mod on your hair to shape it. No need and do not use any atomospheric effects.

There does seem to be an issue with the latest beta in 2015 however. Marsel and I are looking into it now.

Thanks!

Michael

Many thanks for your reply.  I have done as decribed to the letter and no luck in the latest beta V3, and version 2.5.7.0 and version 2.5.8.0.  Glad to hear you are looking in to it.  Will there be a new release of both v2.5 and v3 beta once possible issue is addressed.  It would be great if I could render Ornatrix in Mental Ray on 3DS Max 2015.

best wishes

Brendan

OK it looks like there might be an issue with 2015. The install should have put the MR shader files in the right place but could you:

1. Double check that yours are in the right place an not anywhere else at all:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2015\NVIDIA\shaders_autoload\mentalray\include\OrnaMR.mi

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2015\NVIDIA\shaders_autoload\mentalray\shaders\OrnaMR.dll

2. Render a basic hair sphere with the steps above. There should be no effect or atmousphere etc.

Does it render OK?

Do you get an error?

Do you get no error but your no hair renders?

Thanks!

Michael

I have tried the suggestion on your last post and here are my findings

1. I already had OrnaMR.mi and OrnaMR.dll in the locations as suggested.

2. On booting up 3DS Max 2015 with a fresh scene the Mental Ray render error message states it cannot load OrnaMR.dll.  The full error message on opening a new 3DS session follows:

LINK 0.0  10MB error 191007: cannot load OrnaMR.dll, The operation completed successfully.

LINK 0.0  10MB error 191012: Unable to load OrnaMR.dll,

MI 0.0  10MB error 121417: rayrc, line 18: cannot find include file "OrnaMR.mi"

LINK 0.0  10MB error 191007: cannot load ./OrnaMR.dll, The operation completed successfully.

LINK 0.0  10MB error 191012: Unable to load OrnaMR.dll,

 3. After starting up a new session in 3DS Max I proceeded to create a Sphere, place the Ox MR primitive in the scene and assign the Ornatrix Hair in the scene to it.  I assigned a standard Material and Arch & Design on separate occasions and placed a Standard Spot Light in the scene for Mental Ray to show the object in render.  On render of both materials I see no sign of the hair only the emitter object.  I also recieve an error message each time I render stating the following:

PHEN 0.4  97MB error  051011: shader "ox_geo_hair" not found.

Hope this info helps to resolve the issue.

kind regards

Brendan

Please give this OrnaMR.dll a try.

Hi

The OrnaMR.dll file you posted fixed my problem with rendering Ornatrix Hair in Mental Ray.  Many thanks for all your help, very much appreciated.  Will you be updating the V2.5 and V3 Ornatrix downloads with this fix included.  As I have mentioned before it has happened on all versions of the install to date when using 3DS Max 2015.

Other than the Puppet P_HairTK shader, which shaders would you recommend to use with Ornatrix and Mental Ray to produce photorealistic hair results?

Great! Yes we will include this fix in the next builds of V2 and V3 of course. For MR hair shaders the P_HairTK seem to be the most popular ATM.

Thanks

Michael

Glad to be of service.  I have done some trials with rendering Ornatrix in Mental Ray and it seems to be the best method for my workflow.  The fact that my Ornatrix hair groom is visible in Mental Ray render elements makes life a lot easier in regards to post production composition.  It is also great to see the hair groom recieving the same lighting and shadow solution as all other objects in the scene.  The more I use Ornatrix, the more I see it as the only way to groom hair in 3DS Max.

kind regards

Brendan
