Combing guides using a map?

I'm looking for a way to comb my guides using a black and white map. Basically, what I'm trying to do is bend the guides at certain points along their growth. I've attached poor illustrations to explain what I mean.

So where is white, the guides continue on their path unchanged. Darker values will gradually repel the guides and make them curve around them.

It seems like using the Orientaion and Slope channels on the Surface Comb is my best bet, but I couldn't find a way to do exactly what I want.

The key point is that I'm trying to find a way to distort the flow of the guides as a whole so that as a whole, the hair system distorts and mimicks the pattern that I feed to it. It seems to me like Surface Comb is considering every strand individually, while I need a way to distort the whole guide system collectively.

Hi Chen,

I see what you mean. I think this is more of a distortion map. That is something we are thinking about for Hair Strips and maybe something we can add as a genral modifer. Thanks for the suggestion.

Michael

Yes, a distortion modifier is exactly what I meant!

Thanks!
