I have a couple questions, sorry if they are already covered. Is it a bug that changing the Distribution Map does not update the Guides? If you change the Guide Distribution Map to Vertex Color, for example, the guides remain unchanged until you go change the Root Count.
Another question regards Hair From Guides. I want to know the general logic of the Use Guide From Faces. Mainly, what general scenarios is it a good idea to have it off? I'm curious because it all the tests I've been playing with, it seems like it should default to On as it took me some experimenting to see the relationship of the Guide distribution in the final output of the hair.
I also noticed that if you make a change to the Guides From Surface modifier distribution (in my test the vertex color again toggling on/off) do not propagate back up to the Hair From Guides automatically--you need to go back up to the Hair From Guides and toggle the Use Gude Faces again.
Knowing this is useful, but wondering if it is possible to make those a little more interactive without affecting performance so you don't have to go up and down the modifier stack as much?

The distribution map thing could be a bug. If you could make a simple scene (teapot with hair) that reprocuse the issue with steps to reproduce and submit that as a bug we will have a look. Use guide faces should be used when you want the hair to grow only on faces that guides are near. this may not be the case if you don't have a lot of guides. In some cases that might not be wanted. With the Guides From Surface Distribution if you could make a simple scene (teapot with hair) that reprocuse the issue with steps to reproduce and submit that as a bug we will have a look. Sounds like you are using Vertex color map in both of your issues. Are you using this as a map or a channel? Vertex color is implemented as a channel and its recommended that be used over the mapslot.
Thanks Michael

I'll post a scene and a video to demonstrate what is confusing me somewhat. I think I mainly understand how to get the results... it's that changing the settings doesn't always display in the viewport as I'm expecting. Attached is a simple sample scene that I saved with the video that explains what appears to be inconsistent. Sorry for all the Uhms :) My brain is slow today. It seems like the display of guides and their affect on the actual hair is not always accurate. Sorry in one point I said Guide when meaning Hair.

Just an update: the example scene and video attached above cover all of the issues I noticed in this thread. I know Michael mentioned posting a defect report. Is it possible to just move this thread over to that board or should I have posted the file/video in that board instead? Hopeully I portrayed well the confusing steps in terms of going up and down the modifier stack and the relationship of changing the vertex color channels vs viewport feedback and resulting parameter changes.

THanks Guys. They way I learn best is to go through all the buttons and functions and clicking around to see if I can just figure things out. This was something that through me for a loop :)
