Questions before buy

Hello,

I’m currently planning to buy Ornatrix Hair for 3DS Max but before I do, I have some questions and I was hoping somebody could answer them (or at least some of them).

1. I'm modeling and posing/animating my characters in another program outside 3DS Max called "DAZ Studio" and I import those characters into Max using either alembic of FBX format. Those characters have a quite high detailed mesh and come without hair. I now want to apply and style their hair in 3DS Max using Ornatrix. With or without animation. I understand that creating hair (and of course beards) can be a lot of work so I want to save the hair/fur for later use for the same figure. So in another scene where I import the same figure again (maybe in another pose or in the same starting T-pose with a different animation) I want to use the same hair or beard/fur again. Is this possible with Ornatrix? Because of beards and fur I cannot rely on skullcaps.

2. How does Ornatrix go with dynamic cloth? Especially let’s say with hair under hoods? Is this working well?

3. Do I need a sculpting software like Z-Brush to have more control over hair-styling or could this all be done with Ornatrix?

4. Can I create wet hair and fur in Ornatrix (this is a major requirement)?

5. What is the best way to learn Ornatrix? I'm not working in a team of trained CG experts or something. I'm just a single 3D enthusiast who would love to create art.

6. Is there any discount for non-commercial work? Because I'm not working in the CG industry. It's just a (expensive) hobby of mine and all i create is free for everybody.

Thank you very much for answering all my questions! Especially question 1 and 4 are very important to me!

Thank you thank you thank you!

Hello,

Let me see if I can address your questions.

1. Yes this is possible. There are a few ways to achieve that goal. We have a Grooms preset system that would allow you to do this. In most cases artist will make a "scalp" mesh that the hair is grown from. You can reuse that scalp for many characters easily if they have the same head shape.

2. You should be able to do hair under a hood fine. You can use ether MassFX or 3ds Max cloth to do this.

3. No need for Z-Brush to style the hair (although you could use it) Ornatrix has all its own brushes that allow for grooming in that manner.

4. Sure. Wet hair and fur is usually achieved via styling, shaders, and to some extent dynamics. Clumping the hair will give it a wet style and applying a proper shader should give it a wet look.

5. We do have an students/educational license. You may qualify for that if your a student. More info on that here:

Thanks

Michael

Thank you so much for answering my question! You helped me alot!

One more thing: About scalps: I understand that this is a nice solution for normal hair but what about body hair like a fur or beards where the mouth is moving? I guess using a scalp for that would not make much sense, would it?

Sadly, I'm not a student any more (almost a year now). So I guess no discount for me then.

Thank you so much! Please have a nice day!

Anything? no?

You can use a distribution map right on top of your animated mesh to selectively plant the hairs, there is no need for the scalps. You can also just have hairs on selected faces.

A distribution map? Alright, thank you very much. I'll look into this :)

Yes, both Ox Guides from Surface and Ox Hair from Guides have a distribution map parameters
