I have Baked Guides and when I select mesh as distribution surface the guides all translate to world zero - what am I missing?

Yes, this is related to the render error. I have some whiskers that are splines, they get the render error every time so I baked them to guides but I can't pick a distribution surface without them translating to world zero.
I see, uncheck Roots Detached in the Ground Strands modifier.
