Ornatrix V5 questions and humble requests about Guide Groups, Uv per strands., and Parting.

Hey guys,

first impression of Ornatrix 5 is very positive, some good results very quickly without being a wizz, that's quite satisfying. Thanks for the greast work.

However there are a ew things that kept me up all night and that i wish were either better documented or simply more intuitive.

First the Guide Groups:

it feels too much like a random gamble to set those up. I understand the process, check the box, select guide, set a group ID, click assign, and done... right? Except not. It works once, and then for some weird reasons it just won't happen again. Not handy at all.
My feeling is it should function the same Poly smoothing groups function? So when you select your guide you can clearly see what Groups they belong too and what not? Being stuck to one color per group isn't good enough. Also why oh why does it stop funtionning after a while? I deleted my guide groups, tried to recreate new ones, and nothing.

Second, the UVs per strands:

Oh boy, this one was a real nut cracker, Powerful feature to be able to mix UVs per strands and Color per strand, But please post a clear explanation in the docs about it. I still dont' even know... what is the "Base Channel" for? Again, not very intuitive, and i can't read anything about it anywhewre.

Third and last, Parting.

It took me about 50 clicks before seeing a parting plane created on my mesh. Once created it parted... nothing. Far from the beautiful example in your video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esFAxeY86h0  Which really makes me wonder what it is i'm doing wrong. My guess is that it doesn't work quite well when using many guides? I wouldn't know, any help appreciated. Because so far i gave up on parting which unfortunately is an essentional plus for the look of  groomed Hair / Fur.

Thanks in advance,

cheers,

A.

No edit for posts? Sorry about the mistypes and all.

EDIT: Also tricky to edit the main post, but anyway, done. CHeers.

SO apparently, for teh parting it takes an extra click "after" creating that plane to validate the parting. I missed that part, my bad. But since it's so freaking difficult to click on the geometry and that most clicks are not taken into count, it's kinda hard to know where you stand, first click of the parting plane, second click?  Third one... I'm gonna guess on this one that it's a display issue? It gets confused when having loads of guides in the view? Because i just tried again on a small amount of guides and there it was easy.

Cheers,

Yes it could be a display issue. Could you do a quick screen capture video to show what your getting? That might help. If its much more laggy with lots of hair maybe there is something that can be done on our side.

Thanks

Michael

Hi Adriano,

Thank you for your feedback.

I just tried here and the Strand Groups are working as intended. Which build of Ox and Max version are you using?

I agree about being able to identify which group is selected, we will look into that. And I agree our docs need an update, actually we are working on it.

Thanks a bunch for the feedback guys. I think beside the issue i have with parting, seems the clicks aren't registered by 3ds max when i do so, all my comments / complaints up there are obviosuly lack of experience with Ox. More things make sense now, and thanks for that animated gif, i hadn't seen it before and i understand the process now. it's nto what i was doing indeed.

Great to hear you're updating the docs / help, I was missing some bits in there, and reading it at night while troubleshooting issues, i got a little frustrated.

But again, don't let me rushed comments and requests bring shadow on the fact that indeed the overall first impression using Ox 5 is very very positive. It was the right pick to turn back to Max + Ox for my current project, within the same amount of time spent figuring things out with Ox i get much better results than in Houdini 16 which appeared to be still a bit unstable. Glad though to have both tools at hand in the future. I kinda wish you'd make a Houdini plug in as well ;)

Cheers,

A.

Good to hear you are liking Ornatrix so far. In fact, we are working to implement Ox in Houdini. Laughing

That's awesome news cause i'm growing very fond of Houdini lately. However the hair workflow, which is very unstable in the last HOudini release, i find it a bit unfriendly. And in the very case scenario of my current project where my client wants to "grow / animate" facial hair to be comped on live action Houdini came with a huge load of crashes and restrictions. the guys there also were quite responsive with support, but workarounds and quick tricks to make that happen brought more unexpected problems and crashes. And frankly i didn't get a look i wnated within the day or two i could spend on look / dev.
So i'll be looking forward to the Ox release for Houdini. meanwhile i'll do my current project in Max with Ox for sure. With what i could pull off in a day of getting used to Ox i'm confident that within a week or two results will be more than satisfying.

Cheers,

A.
