Help with Ornatrix modifiers stack and ground strands

Hi everyone,

I am studying the possibilities of Ornatrix and trying to merge it to my workflow. But I am having some troubled time with the ground strand modifier in 3DS Max 2017.

I have a character rigged ready to be animated, and I have already created a scalp mesh with the hair as I want. What I want now is to make the hair moving with the head animation. To do so, I added a Skin wrap modifier before the Ornatrix modifiers on my scalp mesh. Is this the right way to do it?

I have read about the Ground Strands modifier but when I tryed to use it by selecting my rigged character as Base surface and clicked on the Ground button the Hair from Guides modifier got messed up and only my guides were rendering (from what I understand, the modifier was not creating hair besides of the guides, I just don't know why).

This is how my modifiers stack looks.

When should I use the Ground Strands Modifier? Am I doing wrong by using the Skin wrap?

Thanks.

Hi Alexandre,

I'm going to reply to your questions one by one:

"What I want now is to make the hair moving with the head animation. To do so, I added a Skin wrap modifier before the Ornatrix modifiers on my scalp mesh. Is this the right way to do it?"

That is a way to do it and it should work. But, why not just link the scalp mesh to the head?

"I tryed to use it by selecting my rigged character as Base surface and clicked on the Ground button the Hair from Guides modifier got messed up"

I think you should ground the guides to a separated scalp mesh and not directly to the rigged character, this way you won't have any problems related to hair if the character have to be changed later in production. Also, if you change the distribution mesh the hair itself is going to change, unless you use Detach Selected Hair From Surface but this feature is only available on Ox 5. But if this happens again (The mess up guides issue)you can try the workaround found in the docs HERE. However, I think your first approarch is better than using OxGroundStrands in this case, did it worked?

If you still have problems with this I'll be happy to take a look into your scene and give you some suggestions.

Thank you very much Jeordanis for your attention and quick support :)

The skin wrap way worked fine, I was just worried if the ground strand modifier whould be a "must use" in the ornatrix workflow. And I haven't thought about character changes that may cause problems, it was good that you pointed out.

I used the skin wrap because linking the scalp to the body would just link it to the body pivot point and if the head moves to the side, for exemple, the pivot point would be at same place and would not move the scalp. I could link it to the head controller object but I chose to do it with the skin wrap to have a scalp/hair that fits automatically to any changes in the mesh of the head (by editing the polys, some morphs etc).

But now you solved my doubts. Once again, thanks.
