Hello,

Im searching for info but cant find it, please help...im using unreal engine 4.18.3 and 3dsmax 2018.4, How do i export Hair to unreal engine? I tried Alembic Hair export but it errors in UE4...I tried following the hairworks tutorial but being in german and not being able to turn on english subtitles makes this task even harder...

can anybody recommend a tutorial or help me with this please?

Hi,

Youn can't import Ox hair into UE4 as hair itself unless you use Hairworks. You can export it as mesh using MeshFromStrands on top of the hair. The video you mention does have English subs in fact, but there is a lot of information in nVidia's documentation about Hairworks and how to use it, they have also some videos to do this (which I can't link here), you just need to convert the hairs into curves and follow from there using the instructions found in Hairworks's documentation.

Thanks Jeordanis..I will continue to investigate..ultimately i could finally see the subs...must have been a glitch with my laptop.

Hi Again...

sadly I couldnt find an UE4 4.18 build that has hairworks incorporated (i dont think there is one yet..i searched extensively)...so i was thinking of another workflow...I saw a youtube tutorial about wind and 3dsmax plants, and if I could port this workflow for hair would be great for my imediate purpose...it consisted of using max's vertex paint to define from "root to tip" where the object would more affected by the wind...is there a way to define a vertex paint gradient automaticaly in Ornatrix? this way i could perhaps take this info onto UE4 and use that to "simulate" the hair.

Hi,

I'm not sure but, do you mean something like this: https://vimeo.com/226661286

Hi Jeordanis,

Im so sorry I didnt see your reply, but yes thats what i would like..is it possible to somehow translate that data into vertex color?

I was able to find an UE4 build that has Hairworks in it..but after trying it out, and works quite well actually...it gets to a point where shading it doesnt give very nice results, so i will have to revert back to hair from planes..
