Ability to change size of uniform grid?

I'm having problems getting what I want by using hair to create the strands of a feather using 'Uniform Distribution'. The default grid pattern overlays many hairs on top of each other, creating groups of hairs that are uniformly distributed instead of distributing each hair uniformly from each other. Is there a way to change the grid size, or force each hair to not be on top of each other?

Or am I coming at this the totally wrong way?

Hi,

I'm not sure if I understand the problem. How are you creating the hairs or strands for the feather, using Propagation modifier? Using Hair From Mesh Strips?

The hairs are first created on a spline, then grounded to a super thing strip of geo. After a bit of trimming with an 'OX Edit Guides' modifier, I get guides like in my other post I left today:

The guides are quite close together, but when I use 'Uniform Distribution' for my hair, the hairs become quite far apart, and they appear to be on top of themselves. I would expect the hairs to be uniformly distributed, but bunching up as you can see in the inserts. I've attached a file in Max 2017 that shows what is happening. The screen left side of the feather is attempting to use 'Uniform Distribution', while the right side is using 'Random (per face)'.

This file also illustrates my issue with my other post as well.

Thanks!

Hello, I was wondering if there might have been any movement on both of my recent issues.

Thanks!

Hello,

Now I understand the issue. I'm not 100% sure but I think the problem is on how the hair was created and probably the UVs of the distribution surface. I think in this case you should use Random or "Even" distribution (If you are using V6 Beta) which in this case gives good results. I suspect the wierd results in Uniform mode are due to the way Uniform distribution works. I will investigate and get back to you.

Also, have you tried the Propagation modifier to create feathers?
