I am new to Ornatrix and I saw the video: Ornatrix Maya: Hair guides sculpting time-lapse

I tried to duplicate the method in 3ds Max but it seems different. Can anyone tell me the initial steps to take as shown in the video? How do I initially create a single guide and what modifiers do I need to be below it?
