Layer views can be used for keeping track of layers. You can easily hide, freeze and set any properties to layers. Zookeeper also allows you to group layer sets into Layer Groups for more control and flexibility. In this tutorial you will organize some objects into layers as well as layer groups.
Note: All of these objects have been set to use layer properties in 3ds max Preferences. If you are to use layers heavily it is recommended that you set 3ds max to use layer properties by default.
1. Open the scene LayerTreeViews.max. This scene contains a few objects we will add to and organize in layers.
2. Click the Pin button on the Pallets view to give yourself some more room and adjust the layers view to be a little larger by dragging the top border up a bit.
3. Create a new layer by clicking on the new layer icon in the layers view.
4. Rename it Lights by doing a slow double click (like you would a windows file) on the name.
5. Ctrl click on the lights filter icon in the layers view and select all the lights. Now drag them into the new Lights layer.
When creating a new layer ZK will also assign the currently selected objects to that layer. This can be a fast way to add objects to layers. Try it with the next step.
6. Create 6 new layers with the these objects in them:
Torus (Torus01)
Spheres (Sphere01 Sphere02)
Pillars (Cylinder01, Cylinder02)
Chair (All Objects named Chair)
Teapots (Teapot01)
Cameras (Camera01 and its target)
Now that we have our objects assigned to layers you can adjust some of the properties.
7. Set each layer to have a color of your choosing. Because the objects are set to use layer properties they all update with this color in the view.
8. Hide the Lights layer in by clicking the eye icon.
9. Freeze the Camera layer by clicking the freeze layer icon.
Now that you have renamed, organized and set some basic properties for your layers lets set some more properties.
10. Right click on the Spheres layer and go to Properties. From the layer properties menu, choose X-Ray Material.
Now both spheres will be see through in the viewport. You can set any property you like per layer to affect all objects in that layer. To expand this further Zookeeper has Layer Groups that can allow you to do this with many layers at a time. Next you will add some Layer Groups and set properties for them.
11. Click on the New Layer Group button in the Layers View to create a new Layer Group. Rename that layer group Animation.
12. Drag both the Spheres and Torus layer into the new Animation Layer Group.
13. Right click on the Animation Layer Group and turn on the Trajectories property.
Now you can see the trajectories for all layers in that group. The layers still have there own properties so the Spheres continue to be see through. Next you will make one more Layer Group for for high poly objects
14. Create a new Layer Group and rename it HighPoly. Drag the Pillars layer and the teapot layer into this group.
15. Right click on the Layer Group and turn on the Box Mode property.
Now any objects in this HighPoly group will be displayed in box mode while they can still have there own layer properties like Renderable, or Cast Shadows.
