Zookeeper makes it possible to manipulate and composite the output of render passes created with state sets. This is done through schematic view using traditional 3dsmax texture map manipulation and specially designed tools in Zookeeper.
To begin compositing state set outputs simply drag and drop all participating states into a blank schematic view. A schematic node containting the state's properties will appear.
By dragging the output handle of the state's schematic node we get "Create a render output node" option. This will automatically create and setup a texture map with our state's render output path as its "File Name" input.
This step can also be done manually by first creating a Bitmap node and then connecting state set's output to its File Name slot.
Note that this isn't an ordinary connection. Wire between a state set's output and a Bitmap node's input represents a live link that will make Zookeeper update the bitmap's input file any time you change the state set's current render output.
Try recording the state and setting a render output path. You can notice that as soon as you stop recording the bitmap's file name input automatically updates to the output you select. This way the bitmap will constantly have (and update to) current render output of specified state.
We can now add some processing to our output bitmap such as putting it through a color correction or grain nodes (this can be any elaborate setup without limitations). Finally we can combine multiple render pass state outputs into one composite texture node. Here we can blend them together using different blend modes and configurations.
The final step of our compositing setup is to render the resulting map (composite map) to a file or a sequence of files, producing our final result. This can be done by right-clicking on the composite map and selecting "Render to file...". A special dialog is brought up to let you select the output file name, resolution, and time range parameters. Once you're done setting these up you can either render right away (by pressing the Render button) or Save these changes and render later (by going to this dialog again).
Note the "Browse PSD..." option. This is a separate button because 3dsmax does not allow you to save to PSD files by itself. Zookeeper provides this special option with an ability to export all composite map's layers, names, blending info, and other relevant information to Photoshop file sequences. These can then be used for compositing in After Effects while maintaining separate layer information (and not collapsing the layers).
To automate all of the steps listed above for your convenience Zookeeper provides a special option.
Right click on Master state (the root of all state sets) and select "Create compositing view" option. This will automatically set up a new schematic compositing view with render outputs and a composite node for you. It will also bring up the Render to file dialog so you can configure the final output right away.
