Layer manager question

Hi,

I'm intrested to zookeper and I've some question, I'm arch.viz supervisor and I want buy it becouse we need a better layer manager than Max. Right now we use The onion, It's good, but with a lots of layer will be very slow. So, there is the possibility in the future to release only a good Layer manager? Like the good old Scene manager free plug, so only scene manager + scene layer to a lower price? Pay 200$ just for a Layer manager ehehe....

Anyway I try the DEMO. But after 3 second of test crash :)

Empty scene

Create a new layer on ZK

Create a new Layer Group

Drag the layer on the Group

ZK crash!

And there are the possibility to create a layer from selection. For examlpe. I select some sphere. Click the ZK layer button + ( I don't know) "Alt" and the new layer contain a sphere. Like the Onion

(*) And It's good Idea than, after I create a new Layer. Automatically ZK stay active on that layer, so I write the new layer name.

(*) Another question. It's possible to, for examlpe, Shift + click and select all object in thatt layer?

(*) Or ALT+ click and add a current obj seletcion to the layer?

(*) The onion have a little button to the side of the layer name that to do that.

(*) And a button to "delete empty layer", like the Onion.I like a lot the Onion, but it's slow with +40 layer and I can't group a group. Only one group level.  :( . It's a script.

See the video, so you can better understand. :)

Hello,

Thanks for the videos they are very helpful. I managed to reproduce the crash by following your steps exactly (I couldn't reproduce it in other scenarios), I will fix it for next build.

So, there is the possibility in the future to release only a good Layer manager?

That will be considered but for now Zookeeper is aimed to be a unified solution (with schematic interface).

And there are the possibility to create a layer from selection. For examlpe. I select some sphere. Click the ZK layer button + ( I don't know) "Alt" and the new layer contain a sphere. Like the Onion

When you have objects selected and click add layer the selected objects are automatically moved to the new layer. You can also right click on objects and choose "Add selection to a new layer"

(*) And It's good Idea than, after I create a new Layer. Automatically ZK stay active on that layer, so I write the new layer name.

Agreed, will look into that

(*) Another question. It's possible to, for examlpe, Shift + click and select all object in thatt layer?

You can right click and "Select children" which should select any objects if they were expanded.

(*) Or ALT+ click and add a current obj seletcion to the layer?

I will look into this.

(*) And a button to "delete empty layer", like the Onion

And this too :) Thanks a lot for the comments and videos again.

Good!

Perfect :)

When you have objects selected and click add layer the selected objects are automatically moved to the new layer.

I can't see the "add layer button". Only a "Create a new layer", but the object stay in the old layer.  See the video.

Agreed, will look into that

Perfect :)

You can right click and "Select children" which should select any objects if they were expanded.

Ok, but you must select a layer, right click and find a Select children button. 3 operations. Too much time IMO. I think it's better one click solution. Sorry, but I'm fans of  "The Onion" and I love SPEED and less click! I use a lot a layers in my work :)

I will look into this.

ooook!

And this too :)

good! And see the video. If I select an object in the Layer 0, the tree expand. It's not useful, because I can't see the "Create a new layer button". With a lot of objects I must scroll up the Layer UI. So I prefer that stay collaps (in some case I think this is useful, but not in all situation). Imanage Layer, not obj and in arch viz, we have scene with +10.000 Obj. I don't nee to see all geometries in the ZK Layers UI.

Do you remember Fangorn? Very good Layer manager, but it's died I think. There is a some intresting idea on that ;). See the Fangorn video ehehe...

And your new rename tool (useful) i very similar to the old script (so slow with a lot's of object, but i use it every days).Good to see in ZK.

Zookeeper is a huge plug.  I think if it will be a robust, very fast workflow, useful Layer manager for architect will be perfect! Architect and designer don't need a wire parameter, node Medit (ok, now in Max 2011) etc...

But this is only my opion ^_^

Ah, and what I like in The onion (and what i will see on ZK) is the fast usage, large text button to on-off layer (not little eye icon), fast way to add object, select object on the layer, delete layer with one click solution (or +ALT or + CRTL or SHIFT).

For example, if The onion will be fast (plug version, not script), support a multiple layer group, for our work, will be perfect :)

I don't know if for you is useful, but in attachment a little video about our little Arch work.

For example, you can make a little UI for compact layer manager and a large version when I need to work. Or a large button for the little eyes icon. All are just suggestion.

In the Onon you can switch ON-OFF visibility, freeze, all group option layer just with right click.

do a very good job with an upgrade the old The onion script. And I help him with some suggestion. But the Paul's forum is died and I think The Onion too :)

Hi Francesco,

I can't see the "add layer button". Only a "Create a new layer", but the object stay in the old layer.  See the video.

Hmm that is strange, all selected objects should be added to a new layer and it works here. I'll have another look.

Ok, but you must select a layer, right click and find a Select children button. 3 operations. Too much time IMO. I think it's better one click solution. Sorry, but I'm fans of  "The Onion" and I love SPEED and less click! I use a lot a layers in my work :)

I agree that oe click is way more convenient. I'll see what i can do about that.

Zookeeper is a huge plug.  I think if it will be a robust, very fast workflow, useful Layer manager for architect will be perfect! Architect and designer don't need a wire parameter, node Medit (ok, now in Max 2011) etc...

I am really glad you are giving ZK a chance :) We will certainly work on improving the layer manager and your comments are great! So please keep them coming.

I don't know if for you is useful, but in attachment a little video about our little Arch work.

Thanks for all the videos again, very helpful stuff. I will see how many of your suggestions I can incorporate in the next few builds.

Hi there,

I also think the layer management in ZK could use a bit of work - I also use the onion (and have for about 3 years) as the layer manager of choice. What i love about it is how simple and functional it is - everything it does works well for me - but when I saw some of the things zk can do, I thought that there was room for improvement.

What i like in zk layers is:

- you can select an object and it'll show you what layer it is in

-you can search in layers for something (and drag from one layer to another)

These are two great functions, but i'm still using the onion for overall functionality (i could elaborate on what i like in the onion if it you want).

Hopefully you can steal some ideas from the onion (hope that doesnt annoy Paul H) - like maybe a button mode for the layer management tree view?

Cheers, Sean.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for chiming in. Would love to hear the ideas you have. I will be concentrating my development on tree views for the next little while so any information is helpful.

Thanks!
