Thanks for the reply. I've managed to find a workaround by deleting all the groom information from unreal in Houdini before bringing in the curves. (Added benefit I can reduce the amount of hair on the way as it's far too heavy to sim otherwise.) Then create the guides from curves using the built in menu.
The process is working thus far, if I encounter or need to grounding later I will definitely email / talk to you on Discord.
