What I do is add hair to mesh, use distribution map in the Hair From guides not in the guides from mesh , then in Edit Guides Operator I select all and Delete. With the Plant tool in th Edit Guides Operator I then start to place down my own guides. Now to note if you start changing anything in the Mesh From Guides Opperator such as changing guide amount you cant select all the guides and delete them, not sure if this a bug or not. This is also a good time to import your own guides which are from splines in C4D.
