Summary

I am using OX selection tools as you can see in video.  Also I noticed that Middle mouse button and drag does not increase brush radius in the settings, but does in the view port.

Thanks for the 1.5 update. 

This feature in v1.5 is much better however it could still do with tweaking as its still selecting some backface strands see image below.  There also is another side effect and that is the grooming angle in which some guides will get ignored even when they are not a back face guide.  In the image below you see that while grooming from a side-on angle the furthest away strand will not groom.  This strand is not a backface it's just further away than the rest although they are all close to each other.
