Crash !!!!!!! All the time, for anything ...

Hello !
Another thread for another big enoying issue.
Ornatrix make C4D crash all the time.
This is the hell.
I work on a project since 2 month now and the bad day I restart C4D 40 or 50 time a day, and in the worste case scenarios, I had to restart my computer because all the machine just freez.
I have a war machine with RTX2080 and AMD Ryzen 3950X, and use C4D R23 and R26.
Graphic drivers are "almost"n up to date, because with last version, it is worst.
C4D freez for anything.
Moving in the viewport make freez, using the edit tool make crash ...
When I open a project, I had to quickly deactivate all Ornatrix and reactivate all, one by one, otherwise I had to wait an infinite time my rig appear.
As I signaled it in another thread, Hair From Mesh Strips take an ininity to build.
MoovPhy works with 30 to 100 guides max. After It run very slow. E
Even C4D native hairs are 100x faster with 5000 guides and collisions activated.
On a more general way, having Ornatrix rigs in a scen make C4D sloxer even when they are disable,
if you select a huge disbaled rig, C4d slow down ...
Sometime, I close a project that work perfecly and can't reopen it without crashing.
It happend to me with a R26 project.
I had to open it R23 to modify it and make it work again without finding the real explaination.
Once, I had to open a scene in a version of C4D were Ornatrix wasn't installed, delete it, and resart from scratch.

I'm sorry but you need to do something !

Hi,

Please provide step by step instructions to reproduce the crash.

Try to reproduce the crash in a new scene, if it doesn't happen, we need a simplified version of your scene where the crash is reproducible. We can use the scene for debugging to determine where is the problem.

Provide the crash log generated by C4D so we can investigate if the crashes are caused by Ornatrix.

Provide exact C4D versions and OS versions.

<div style="color: #000000; font-family: Tahoma; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-size: medium;"> <p>Hello, and thanks for your answer.</p> <div><span style="color: #fa7a00;">" Please provide step by step instructions to reproduce the crash. "</span>
</div>
--> As I said, It happen randomly.
The most instable tool is the edit tool with long hairs. Just try to manipulate hairs with brushes during a half hour and you'll see ...

" we need a simplified version of your scene where the crash is reproducible. We can use the scene for debugging to determine where is the problem."
--> I know, but I restart from scratch a hundred of times because I'm never happy of the result (And It's not a joke), and It happen again and again.
And once again, It happen randomly, so impossible to retrive a particulary problematic project.

" Provide the crash log generated by C4D so we can investigate if the crashes are caused by Ornatrix. "
--> Impossible. C4D freez indefinitely. I have to kill it with task manager everytine, so no log generated.
As I said, in the worst case, all the computer freez.

" Provide exact C4D versions and OS versions"
--> I use Ornatrix V3, 22 septembre build
Win 10 Pro version 22H2, OS build 19045.2364
And, depending of my C4D  license renwal and issues with Ornatrix, I use C4D R23.110 or R26.107 (The problem with the R26 display of Ornatix is that it can take a lot of VRAM, and Redshift cannot compute anymore if the scene is oppened. So no IPR use possible)

During holiday, I worked on my laptop :
Ornatrix_C4D_R21_2_2.3.9.31824_35302039203336343136
Win 10 Home, Version 21H2, Os build 19044.2364
C4D R21.207

A lot of crashes too ...

On this purpose, during the hollidays I created the attached project on my laptop.
It don't crash, but impossible to open It on my main computer when I came back home.
I had to load it in a version of C4D without Ornatrix, uncheck all Ornatrix objects, before I could open It an Ornatrix equiped C4D version, and re-enable the Ornatrix objects.
Maybe It's a begening ...

I've had some project files where the Ornatrix plugin crashes C4D everytime I open the file. When that happens, I try to open the file with a version of C4d where Ornatrix is not installed, copy all the objects in the file and paste them into a new C4D file and then try to open the new file with the C4D version that has Ornatrix installed.

This is what I did several and this effectively fix some issues during a certain amount of time.

I have less crashes since mi-decembre but still happen several times a day.

I think C4D is also a part of the problem, beacause with some versions and some drivers, changing of view can make it crash often.

And with hairs, it has so much things to display that it get crazy.

For one time, I have a log, but not sure Ornatrix is responsible.

I just tried to navigate in the viewport just after loading an ornatrix ABC

I fixed one defect that would cause a crash on scene open for me, but I don't think it's related to your problems (a new nightly build should be up by tomorrow, 31982).

When I opened the scene, the viewports remained empty. It looks like the scene is too complex and viewport drawing fails.

The crash in the first log is in C4D drawport, so I guess you might send it to Maxon too, maybe along with the scene, but it would help both us and them if the scene was simpler (Maxon should be able to use Ornatrix demo for testing).

We'll keep investigating with what we've got.

I'm really sorry to not be able to furnish more clues.
If only the crashes genarated log ... but 99% of the time it just freez indfinitly and I have to kill it myself.

I effectively send reports to Maxon, when I have ones ...

C4D clearly has a lot of viewport issues.
Whatever the version of Nvidia drivers, I'm experiencing a lot of micro-freez and sometime short black screen when I use Ornatrix.
Whaterver the Ornatrix scene I open, I always have to disable Ornatrix, let C4D display the scene, and re-enable Ornatrix, otherwise, C4D take a huge amout of time to display the scene.

I observe that I had more issues in R26, certainly because they update the viewport to make it faster.

In anyway, I notice that when I work to fast with Ornatrix, It stress the software and lead to more crashes.

And with a bit hight, the only reason I have less crash now that last month is because I don't use the edit tool anymore, except for generating groups.

Using the edit brush is the most stressfull action you can do for C4D, and lead to tens of crashes a day.
</div>

I finally manage to have more crash reports and send them to Maxon.

They told me, with no surprise, that Ornatrix was the cause of the crash.

You'll find them here "_BugReport-SendToMaxon.zip".

I experiment other crashes today probably compiled in this "_BugReport.txt"

Can you try to open the attach scene (BUG-Strand_Datas.c4d) and change the view in the viewport please ?

At the origin, I prepared it to reveal strange behaviors with "Generate Data" operator.

But like many scenes, it was working perfectly when I closed it, and since I want to reopen it, it crash each time I want to change the view in the viewport.

How are you changing the view? Just rotating the viewport?

Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)

Just like in the video.

The camera is loked, so you can't meve it in the perspective view. Just switch between perspective, top, right ...

But today the scene I upload yesterday don't freez anymore ... This is the hell ...

The only thing that change on my computer, is a Windows update this night.

I tried that at first but it doesn't crash. Anyway, Ivan will be looking into the logs to see if there is anything useul.

Ok, thank you !

Another Scene that was working last weeks.

But now, if all Ornatrix are enable I can't navigate in the view without crash or full freez in less than 1 second.

Here is the .log, and I send you the scene by e-mail.

Which is the exact Ornatrix version? Can you also attach the file C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Temp\OrnatrixC4DR26.log which provides that info.

I get warnings when I load BUG-Strand_Datas.c4d in Ornatrix 2.3.9, the file seems to be saved with V3.

Hello Ivan.
I confirm that I work on version 3 but I had similar crashes on V2.
Whatever, I can't go backward now because if I open my projects with V2, my hair styles blows out (some operator are not interpreted as the same way like "Surface Comb" for exemple, and others).
I'm on build of septembre and can't update forward neither because to much issues with the builds of Decembre 2022 and January 2023 that I signaled in a lot of other threads.
So I forced to stay on this version for the moment.

I send the scene to you by email ASAP

Hello Florian,

Thank you for the log files. You sent me another scene by e-mail (00-MODE_BUN-V2-15.c4d) which is different from the one you attached here (BUG-Strand_Datas.c4d) and I didn't find any problems with it, after enabling all the disabled hair objects.

With BUG-Strand_Datas.c4d I couldn't reproduce a crash when just modifying the view. I tried both in a perspective view and in the camera view after unlocking the camera position.

But I did experience a crash when just clicking anything in the Objects list, like any of the hair modifiers or even the Camera or Plane objects. The crash is a null-pointer reference in C4D's drawport_directx.module.xdl64. called by our code. So it looks like the fault is both ours and Maxon's: on one hand we're probably using the drawport API in an incorrect way, on the other hand Maxon have not guarded against incorrect usage and referenced a pointer without checking it for null.

We'll try to guess what we're doing wrong and work around it, but as the crash is in Maxon's code, they could help us by checking what parameter is it exactly that we're not passing correctly to their API (and maybe even add a check for null before referencing that pointer).

I'm testing with the latest V3 nightly build. There have been some fixes since the latest stable, but I can't suggest that you switch to it because as you see your scene is still impossible to work with, though for a different reason.

BTW, the scene crashes in 2023 too, but doesn't crash in R25, for what it's worth.

There is a new nightly build 32264 of Ornatrix V3 Beta for C4D. Please see if it will behave better for you.
We'll try to apply the same fix to the V2 stable too.
