Number of planted guides:

I like the way in C4D own hair system I have the option to plant a chosen number of guides and often having the option to plant one at a time, this is ideal for precise planting. 

Interpolated on or off:

Also, another option which is very important to choose if the planted guides are interpolated from existing guides.

In use, I would add several guides one side of head and style this, then group that side.  Next, I would add another manually set of planted guides without interpolation on so the guides stand out from the normal surface, not try to follow guides I already have down.  This makes it very easy to select the new guides and group them and style them.
