Selection types:

Selection by shading group / phong / edgebreak.

Example:

You could break the shading of the head where the tophair and the side hair is located.

Drag line for gradient selection

Example:

For shaved side hair, you could define a gradient to match the transition to the top hair (to be plugged into a length op)
