Description: | Found a workflow that works perfectly. Except for subdivision surface. I like to have my characters as low-poly as possible but if I want to use redistribution on polygon selections ornatrix doesn't seem to consider the subdivision object in c4d. As a result the guides & hairs aren't positioned correctly. (see attached a screenshot) |

I believe this will be a feature we get eventually. They have it for their 3ds max version, it's called a smooth surface modifier https://youtu.be/j2joZuRELX4 Maybe they can speak to an estimated timeline for this feature to be added. I second wanting it also! :)

Yes :-), and smooth surface is already in the V2 beta version, although V2 beta keeps crashing for some reason in my C4D R21, so sticking with the latest V1 for now. If the developers keep up their fast iterations and updates it shouldn't be too far off I'm guessing. Thnx for the link! It's exactly that.

They develop faster than I can type… Just downloaded the latest V2 beta. no crash yet, all working! There's a very small difference since I'm using Catmull Clark (N-Gons) but besides that, seems to be working fine, will try to do some more testing today. update: changing hair interpolation to barycentric > crash… anyway it's beta so probably some things still need to get smoothed out…

Hi Jonas, Yes, the Smooth Surface modifier. Thanks for testing. I can't reproduce the crash changing any of the interpolation settings. Are you able to reproduce this in a new scene? If so, please attach it here. Otherwise I would need the original scene for testing.
Can you tell me more about the other crashes that you are getting with V2 in Cinema? Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)

Hi Jeordanis,
Thnx for the quick follow-up. I tried a few things but can't seem to find where the problem is. There's 2 files attached. test2_v2 is the character, if I change Hair From Guides to Barycentric, c4d quits. test_v2 is a simple cube where the guides don't change with smooth surface when Redistribute Face Include is checked. I also remember while trying some stuff yesterday, when I hit rendering my harddrive was loosing disk space at a very rapid rate until only a few MB left. The same thing happened in V1 but can't remember the version, this hasn't happened with the latest V1, not sure if this is giving a better idea what to look for? Some kind of memory allocation thing? This goes way beyond my knowledge though :-) I'm on macOS Catalina 10.15.4, AMD FirePro D500

Hi Jonas, I can reproduce both issues with test2_v2 and test_v2. About the other issue, what renderer are you using? Note that when using Smooth Surface modifier you should use it at the top of the hair stack. In your case below Mesh from Strands. It should always look like this:
If you are not using Mesh from Strands it should be on top. Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)

Hi Jeordanis, Will change that in the hierarchy, that's good to know! thnx! The renderer I'm using for this project is Arnold, although after checking it's not the latest Arnold version, not sure if that might make a difference as well. It's C4DtoA 3.1.0 / Arnold core 6.0.4.0

Yes!! All is working with the latest beta nightly build :-)) The smooth surface crashes if the polygon selection has N-gons though… but changed the model, these n-gons were bothering me anyway… Man, this plugin is greattttt! |
