Problem

Description:

3DS Max crashes when selecting Fur Ball under Quick Hair to start a new hair project. I have tried a complete fresh install of 3ds Max and Ornatrix with the same results. I have reverted to Ornatrix 6 and it seems to be functioning correctly (though I did experience the occasional crash with it as well but nothing as consistent and reproducable as this).

Steps to Reproduce:

1 - Start 3ds Max 2017

2 - Create Sphere

3 - Click Ornatrix Toolbar Quick Hair

4 - Click Fur ball

3DS Max fatal error

Alterately if you try to avoid quick hair and add modifiers manually it seems to crash when adding the Hair from Guides modififer.

Hi,

I can't reproduce the crash. I tried with Max 2017 and the latest nightly build of Ornatrix V7:

Please try the latest nightly and tell me how it goes.

Hi,

I just tried the latest build and still am having no luck. It still crashes just the same. I uninstalled Orntarix V6. Downloaded the new MSI file and installed it automatically from that. It doesn't even ask me for a license or anything and I see in my account that my licenses remain unassigned (I deactivated them earlier today to see if that would make a difference).

I can do SOME things with the plugin as you can see with the attached image (I was able to create some guides and groom them) but as soon as I apply a hair from guides modifier it crashes.

Another funny thing: if I change the viewport hair render mode to lines instead of mesh the Quick Hair Fur ball option works and doesn't crash (first image) but as soon as I change it back to rendering in mesh mode (second image) it crashes again.

Make it crash again, then go to your %TEMP% folder, find the file called Ornatrix3dsMax*.log and attach it here. Thanks.

Here's the log file you requested.

I also encountered this MaxScript error (see image) by taking the following steps:

1) Launch 3DS Max

2) Create Sphere and select it

3) Use Ornatrix Menu to select "Add Guides From Surface Modifier"

That MaxScript error doesn't occur every time - just seemingly on a newly created object.

Thank you. We can reproduce the crash and the team is working to fix it.

3) Use Ornatrix Menu to select "Add Guides From Surface Modifier"

I don't see such an option in the Ornatrix menu, there is just "Create / Add Hair". And I can't reproduce the error in 3ds Max 2016.

Thanks for your attention to this issue.

I will try to provide more info to help track this down if I can. I tried my best again to do a clean install of Ornatrix just now. I used the uninstaller for it and then I went into my 3DS Max directory and searched for any reference to Ephere or Ornatrix and removed it. I did the same in my AppData diretory and my User directory. I then followed your instructions in the documents to remove the licensing service. I downloaded the latest nightly build of Ornatrix and reinstalled it from there. I am still getting the same errors and crashes:

Max Script Error (steps to reproduce):

1) Launch 3DS Max 2017

2) Create a Sphere and select it

3) Use the Ornatrix menu to select the option "Add Guides from Surface Modifier" (as highlighted in the attached image)

4) Max Script error occurs - I have attached the MaxScript log if this helps.

Crash (Steps to reproduce):

1) Launch 3DS Max 2017

2) Create a Sphere and select it

3) Add modifier to the stack "Ox Guides from Surface"

4) Add modifier to the stack "Ox Hair From Guides"

I have attached an image here as well. There are other ways to get this crash to occur (such as Quick Hair Furball) but this is the most direct approach.

The only thing I've done differently with my 3DS Max install is that I don't install it to the standard directory. I install it to my own Applications directory.

Thank you for the detailed info. I wasn't aware that my Ornatrix menu was damaged (had just two items), I restored it and reproduced the MaxScript error, will investigate.

As for the crash, it is caused by the "Mesh" rendering mode of hair. We're trying to fix that. Until then, please switch the rendering mode to "Lines" from the Ornatrix / About/Settings dialog.
