Problem

Description:

Ox hair generated from splines from v4 and newly created Guides from Shape in v5 cause this error using Redshift

"An exception occurred while rendering with 3ds Max.

This render will abort. If you render again without resolving the exception, you may experience instability.

Unknown Exception"

Steps to Reproduce:

editable spline>create/add hair

Hey Magilla, do you have an scene where I can try to reproduce this?

building the stack manually doesn't get the render error. Using the menu 'add hair" creates a reference and gets you the error

I think it is related to the grounding modifier. If I detach and reattach the roots the original guides are moved (I'm not sure why although it is definitely undeirable), but I can render and switch distribution modes in the Hair from Guides modifier . If I don't detach I can only set the hair from guides to be 'guides as hair', no other option produces any results.

I can't reproduce the render error, it seems to be working fine here, I wonder what is different in my setup... I'm using Ox5, Max 2017 and Redshift 2.0.83.

Regarding your issue with the GuidesFromShape, The splines and the disitribution surface have to have the pivot in the same place, you can use the align tool in Max to alight the pivot of the splines to the pivot of the distribution surface, then reset the xform of the splines, in GroundStrands uncheck Roots Detached. We have a video on this. Let me know if that helps.

thanks - yeah forgot to zero out transforms. I got the render error again after changing distribution modes, I have collapsed to baked guides and all seems to be fine again.

Using Redshift 2.0.84

Ok, I will try with this version o Redshift, maybe there is the problem.

I seem to be getting the error fairly consistently when using hair generated from splines. On regular baked guides or hair from surface I have had the error a few times and it has been resolved by replacing the Hair from guides mod. Also once I got the error when copy/pasting an edit guides mod from one hair system to another

Any resolution to this problem?  I'm continually getting the same error when generating hair from splines.  I was unable to view the video tutorial as the link appears to be missing.  Using Max 2017 and redshift_v2.5.32

Nevermind, my problem seemed to be with not grounding the strands.

Glad you found the cause of the problem.
