So if you make a plane of hair, create a Braid Guides object, add Ox Clump modifier and add the braid object to the Global Pattern Objects list.
I've seen it demoed in Maya but I'm not able to replicate in Max. Maybe I'm missing a step?
After adding the Braid object to the patterns list you also need to select it from that list and add it to the global patterns list below
