Demo problems

Hello.

I'm mentioning the following as demo problems since I don't have a retail yet to know if it applies there too.

I itried 2.2.8 under 3ds Max 2013 and 2014 x64. The installation was successful. As of now, I'm testing it on 2014.

1. I thought the demo restriction was being unable to save (therefore the reminder popups) but the rest of the functionality would be in place. Misunderstanding on my part? Is there a description somewhere of what is missing or what is usable?

2. I only see support for Mental Ray. Not VRay or anything else. But Mental Ray doesn't recognize the Ornatrix atmospheric raytracer and crashes.

3. I clicked on 'Presets'. It gave an error looking for the 'no_image.jpg' in the wrong plugcfg folder and then it crashed. I copied the jpg there, it asked for a different folder and then crashed. So I copied all the Orantrix presets tree under ENU\plugcfg, ENU\plugcfg_ln and ENU\en-US\plugcfg. It doesn't ask for the jpg anymore and just crashes. A couple of presets are in that folder so it doesn't seem to be a demo restriction.

4. I had a look at the manual installation instructions (out of date?). OrnaCore.dll and the PhysX plugins are missing. Max 2014 has its own MassFX PHYSX4DCC_PhysXLoader64.dll and PHYSX4DCC_PhysXCooking64.dll. Are these PhysX files sufficient for Ornatrix and OrnaCore is not needed anymore?

Thanks.

Hello,

I have looked at the crash and indeed there is an issue with presets installation for 3dsmax 2014. We will try to resolve this for the next build (the crash was already fixed). I am unable to reproduce the Mental Ray crash here. Simply adding hair with a fast raytracer atmospheric gives an unsupported error in MR, which is by design, however everything works after that.

Michael will get back to your regarding other questions shortly.

Thank you for your interest in Ornatrix and for the feedback.

Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)

Hello,

On #1 you are correct. The demos limitation is that it does not save. On #4 you should not have to do anything with Physx anymore. In 2013 and 2014 we are integrated with MassFX. Issues with Phyx dlls is one of the reasons we integrated with MassFX to stay 100% compatible.

Thanks

Michael McCarthy

Thank you both for the clarifications.

The MR case is just the '"Ox Hair Raytrace Fast" is not supported' message (though I don't get any hair rendered with it), when I click 'Quick Hair' and then render.

MR crashes after the above message if I click 'MR Hair' first and then render. But probably I'm skipping some required stuff in this case. Have to read up on it.

Out of curiosity, why would the 'not supported' message for a supported feature be by design?

Regards.

A special MR hair primitive (Mr Hair in objects) is supported under MR, as described here:

https://localhost/plugins/autodesk/max/ornatrix/docs/components/rendering/mentalray_hair.html

The atmospheric isn't supported under MR.

Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)

Ah, that's why the demo crashes. The required OrnaMRHair.dlm is not installed with it.

So basically, neither MR or VRay can be used because of demo limitations.

Fair enough. Hopefully in the future there will be a more beefed up version to test.

Much appreciated for the response Marsel.

I´ve just installed the 2014 (offline)version and recognized that the MR OrnaMR.dll and OrnaMR.mi still installs in the wrong directory.  By default it uses the folders

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2014\NVIDIA\mentalimages\shaders_autoload\mentalray\shaders"

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2014\NVIDIA\mentalimages\shaders_autoload\mentalray\include"

but it should be in

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2014\NVIDIA\shaders_3rdparty\mentalray\shaders"

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2014\NVIDIA\shaders_3rdparty\mentalray\include"

Then in the 3dparty.mi which lies in

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2014\NVIDIA\shaders_3rdparty\mentalray" folder

one should add two lines

link "OrnaMR.dll"
mi "OrnaMR.mi"

After that rendering with mental ray is no problem.

edit:

When the installation routine would use the

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2014\NVIDIA\shaders_autoload\mentalray\include"

and

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2014\NVIDIA\shaders_autoload\mentalray\shaders"

than it should work by default ;-)

hey all,

i just installed ornatrix for 3ds max 2011 and i cant get it to run as i am missing alot of modifiers. After pressing the create hair (quick shortcut) i get an error due to this problem. I would like to test it out and buy this but i have to try first. Any help is apreciated.

greets

Chris

Update:

i just realized that once i create the ox guides from surface all the other options (modifiers) become available. After creating the ox hair from guides it crashes max.

Did you download the demo version or the full commercial version? Also, what is your OS?

Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)

Hi there, Thanks for the reply. Yes i downloaded the demo version and im using windows 10

3ds max 2011 version

cheers

if you need any more informations i will let you know tomorrow as soon as i get back from work. Thanks again for your time.

Chris

Sounds good, if you can please record the exact steps leading up to the crash in a new scene. I will try to reproduce it with the demo here.

Hi there,

ive uploaded a video showing my 2 problems:

1. The quick hair creation not working - script popup

2. Crash - as soon as i load in the third modifier.

thanks for your help and sry for the huge video size. ALso i checked my .Netframework and its up to date aswell.

Also i used the 64bit demo version right at the top - with the latest stable build. 4.4.0.7495 [Latest Stable]

Looks like a display driver issue to me. Are you using Nitrous for viewport display? Try typing in "OrnaAbout()" in the listener and turning off Nitrous hair display in the resulting dialog, then pressing OK.

Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)

i dont use nitrous and im not sure if its available for 3ds max 2011 version. Perhaps theres another one? I tried using the default  in max but no luck. Also once i type in OrnaAbout() or click on the quick hair create button like in the video, there is no option for turning anything off. Im using direct3D 9 and 10 but the same problem still persist. I have a Nvidia Geforce gtx 680 card.

thanks

Chris

Thank you for recording the video, I didn't realize you used Max 2011. Nitrous is only available in 2013 and newer so this wouldn't apply. It is also why those options are greyed out. Can you please try switching your display driver to OpenGL?

Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)

Hi there,

sure youre welcome. Yes my version is max 2011. I can't afford a subscriptionfor max at this point so im using the old version :(. I tried OpenGl and it still crashes. Also i cant use the quick hair select button.  Perhaps its a macro problem? i scrolled through the output so you can have a look. Maybe you can find something.

My gfx card is up to date and i use only one monitor. Maybe i can send you the report file of the crash? There must be a log somewhere for this.

I uploaded the video showing my steps again.

thanks for your time :) I really apreciate it.

If you have any idea of what i can try out let me know.

My system specs:

GeForce GTX 680

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz

16,00 GB RAM

driver version: 368.22

OX System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home

Disc space 918 GB left.

This is strange to see. What if you manually type "OxCreateGroom()" in MaxScript listener?

Would it be possible to have a Teamviewer session so I can try it on your computer? If yes please email me at marsel.khadiyev@ephere.com

Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)

hey its funny but thats what i thought aswell. Sure i will email you.

thanks alot

Chris

hi every one

i have some proble with the demo vertion in specilaly with the mesh strips.

The mesh strips not appear in the rendering.

You have some solution?

Hi Daniele90,

Can you give me more info? Which version of Max and Ornatrix are you using? What rendering engine are you using?
