The inherited property "shape" seems to distort the original shape of the mesh and cut off the end of the mesh. This makes it very difficult to get a nice feather tip using this method.

adding to this - if I have uniform shape checked then I would expect the shorter mesh proxies to be uniformally smaller - they just get shorter. This is particularly obvious when you are trying to create bald spots by reducing guides to shortest length possible.

By adjusting the over all size you should be able to get the proper propotions of the feather or mesh. The render size acts as the width in this case and the strand lenth the hieght. 

that's what I thought but the render mod is not doing anything in the viewport if you are using Mesh from Strands.
