Ox Hair Shells - demonstration or further explanation

I really don't understand how the Ox Hair Shells are supposed to work.

Are they splines or edit polys?  Is there an automatic way to generate them? Where are they used in the stack? 

 

I have so many questions -- I just don't understand their usage at all.

 

 

Shells are usually a copy of the emitter mesh that is positioned further along the spline (maybe with push) that can control the guides. Here is the link to the docs explanation:
