Guides to Splines

Hi,

How can I convert Ornatrix guides to standard 3ds max spline ?

Just apply Edit Spline modifier on top, or right click and convert to spline.

Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)

When I do so, Ornatrix creates an empty object with no splines !!

I have another issue, after nearly 4 hours of styling, I saved my file.

When I reopened it, all the styling was messed up !!

I'm just starting to use ornatrix instead of hair & fur, converting guides to splines saves a lot of work in this case.

What could be the problem ?

Just to make sure, you are using full version, not a demo right? Demo does not save any changes and resets parameters on save.

If you apply Edit Spline modifier on top of your guides you get an empty object?

I'm using a licensed version (V2.0)

When applying an edit spline modifier, I also get an empty object !!

I guess the problem is in the max file itself, cuz when I merge the same file into a fresh scene, I can convert guides to splines with no problem.

The styling was very good, your styling tools are amazing, too bad I have to re-style all my hair again Cry

What should I do to avoid such a problem in the future ?

Quite a few things have changed since V2 so this could have already been addressed/fixed in past few years. Sounds strange that merging would fix the problem. That indicates it could be a problem with unit setup or something similar in the scene. I can't tell much more without knowing more, sorry.

Now I'm sure that these issues are resulted from a corrupt max file, merging everything into a new scene solved the problem.

But I have another issue, my workfolw is as follows:

I create guides from a max spline (using guides from shape modifier), then I ground the guides onto a ground mesh (using ground strands modifier) .

I tried using morpher and skin on the ground mesh and the guides seem to follow it nicely, but when I use pointcache on it (World Space or Object Space), guides don't follow the ground mesh at all.

What could be the problem ?

I can send you the file for further investigation.

Could be a topology issue. Please do send the file an I will have a look.

Thanks

Michael

Hi,

I am playing around with this to create animated procedural splines based on OX stack to pipe these splines into Railclone-system (Itoo) This is looking very promising .

My findings so far:

The empty object after applying edit spline modifier, occurs when strands have less than 3 segments or guide points.

This issue happens in Ornatrix 3.3.0.0 (tested in Max 2014) and seems to be fixed in Ornatrix 4.3.5.7383 DEMO (tested in Max 2016)

Another "related" issue:

When adding an edit spline modifier, underlying animations from OX modifiers (animation of length, rotation,...) or from base object don't get updated through the stack.

This issue happens in Ornatrix 3.3.0.0 (Max 2014) and Ornatrix 4.3.5.7383 DEMO (Max 2016)

What does seem to help (in some cases) is to add an Ox Strand Length modifier with a length map applied (can even be disabled).

Cheers,

Tim

Howdy Tim. Glad to hear the first issue seems to be adressed in the latest build. You second issue with OX Stand Length seems strange. Could you please shoot me a scene and some steps to reproduce the issue. We should be able to fix it shorlty.

Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael,

I attached a simple scene (max 2014) illustrating the issue including the workaround.

Hope this helps.

Hey Michael,

Here is a slighty related issue that occurs when an edit spline modifier is added on top of a stack using the ox Hair Shells modifier.

While the results of the Hair Shells modifier are linear in nature (correct?), adding an edit spline modifier returns different results (where knots would be expected, bezier handles are placed every other knot... kind of :) ) (see attached image knots.jpg)

I've included a scene to demonstrate this (max 2014 Ox 4.3.5.7457).

Hope it makes some sense :)

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks Tim,

I am having a look at these and will get back to you shortly.

Thanks again
