Is Arnold for 3ds Max supported by Ornatrix? A client is looking into purchasing this and that was a concern.

There currently isn't a native support for Arnold on 3dsmax but we're working on adding it and will have it soon in the future.

With the upcoming 3DS MAX 2018 shipping with Arnold Renderer this month, wondering how far off support will be for this.

Not very, it is one of the things we're currently working on.

Awesome news that you are working on it. Do you need some testing done? We got 2018 installed today and testing it out.  Sure would like to see hair in it with the new AI hair shader.

We're back and forth with it with AD. Currently hit with some major roadblocks there. Will update when we have more progress.

I will assume from the lack of response after 4 days that things are not progressing well with Arnold support.  The "major roadblocks" must have been really major.

I'm sorry for the delay, this thread got burried really fast it seems. Unfortunately has been difficult to get what we need from Autodesk to make this happen. We can try to push them a little bit more and wish for the best. I'll keep you posted.

Thank you.  I am interested in how things are working with Autodesk on Arnold.  I heard that render farms had significant issues with the license restrictions imposed by Autodesk.  Apparently, they are specifically restricted from offering renderfarm services in the EULA.  RebusFarm and others have dropped Arnold support as a consequence.  Some seem to be ignoring the EULA and others like GarageFarm are attempting workaround arrangements.  Nonetheless, something doesn't smell right with Autodesk's Arnold strategy.  I wonder if other 3rd party providers such as yourself are having difficulties with Autodesk.

Does Autodesk seem to be purposely evading your requests? Or, is it that the requirements are difficult to provide?

I can only tell you that our requirements are not difficult to provide at all. Maybe Marsel can give you more details.

We didn't have any troubles with regards to Arnold licensing. It would seem rather counterproductive for Autodesk to restrict tools development around Arnold after all. They did offer to help with integration and we took them up, but it seems the progress for 3rd party support in Arnold is stagnating.

Jabba,

Maybe you can render Ox hair in Arnold for Max by converting the hair into polygons using MeshFromStrands. This is not ideal but maybe it works for you.

I like the idea.  Can I convert dynamic Ox hair into polygons (e.g., alembic cache)? Is there a tutorial for this approach that I could review?

At 13:30 into the video, he adds the Ox Render Settings and Ox Mesh From Strands modifiers to dynamic hair.  This appears to be what you are suggesting.

Any progress on support for Arnold? The workaround does work ok but is not ideal. Keen to see this happen.

Now that Ornatrix supports Arnold, what is the workflow? If I add Ox Arnold to the top of the stack without Ox Mesh From Strands below it, it renders nothing. Is Ox Arnold meant to work with Ox Mesh From Strands? What is the workflow to get the best result?

Ox Mesh from Strands is not needed if there's Ox Arnold at the top. Please install the latest nightly of Ornatrix, we fixed a file naming issue which could cause the problem you describe.

Hi, Ox Arnold renders well using an hdri. Have you tested it using Physical Sun & Sky with Sun Positioner? When I try it the hair is almost black even though I have applied a golden blonde hair colour. Are there special settings I should apply while using Physical Sun & Sky / Sun Positioner?

What do I do when finalizing the renderer when I don't see the ox arnold rendering option in the Modifier list?

Hello, we will test Ox Arnold export with Physical Sun & Sky, I don't think we've done that before.

wnsahr: Make sure you have Ornatrix hair in the stack, the modifier will only be visble if that's the case (no mesh from strands modifier on top, for example)

Hi Guys,

We found an error when trying to render Ornatrix ahir with a Sun Positioner. We will investigate this and get back to you as soon as we have more info.

Right now it seems to be working fine if you render the scene with the Sun Positioner BEFORE adding Ox hair, if you add the hair after the Sun Positioner it will work as expected.
