I just tried here and it seems to be working fine, as you can see in the image below. However, I don't recommend using a distribution map in GuidesFromSurface, any settle change made to the texture will mess up your hair because the hair distribution will change drastically. Remember: Guide Distribution and Hair Distribution are different things. The Hair Distribution in HairFromGuides is made using the guides, Guides Distribution is made using the surface/distribution mesh, in other words, is based on topology. Please have this in mind when using a distribution map in GuidesFromSurface. If you still need to use a texture map there, remember to turn ON Remember Roots Positions in GuidesFromSurface to avoid potencial problems.
Anyways, can I have your test scene? I would like to take a look into it to see if there is a bug. Save it for Max 2017 please.
