Title:Maya: Ornatrix crash during playblast

Problem

Description:

Ornatrix Version: 2.4.9.21924

Maya Version: 2019.1

Note on Version used: Our current production cycle is locked to using 2.4.9.21924 - Future productions will be able to upgrade to newer versions.

During production, we use Maya's Playblast to capture work for review. We have had mixed success with stability when combined with Ornatrix, but have come across a reproduce-able error/crash we would like to draw attention to.

There is typically a large cost to producing a playblast with all the creature FX elements enabled (including fur/hair) so we choose to run the viewport capture through a render farm job. Maya's playblast is able to function in batch mode, provided the machine doing the work has either a physical GPU or a virtual GPU (virtual machine).

Side note: We have also recieved reports from our artists concerning stability issues while running in GUI mode

This has also been tested with Ornatrix Version: 3.0.1.22988

See attached .zip file for more details and crash logs.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. New maya 2019 scene with ornatrix loaded
  2. With nothing selected, create a new furball
  3. Save the file and close maya
  4. Open .../Maya2019/bin/mayapy.exe
  5. Initialize maya standalone
  6. Open the previously created file
  7. Run maya's playblast command

See attached .zip file for more details and crash logs.

Hi Brendan,

Thank you for your report. I will investigate this and get back to you asap.

Hi Jeordanis,

Any additional information about / suggested workarounds for the issue we encountered would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Brendan,

I can reproduce the crash. This will be fixed soon. Sorry for the delay.

Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)

I cannot reproduce the crash on Windows with both Ornatrix V2 and V3.

On Mac I get a crash with a scene with a single sphere without any Ornatrix used or even loaded, so it looks like a Maya/Mac problem, not Ornatrix.

What is your operating system?

Also, you mention some attached logs but I don't see any attachments here.

Hi Ivan,

Thank you for the reply.

I've attached the same .zip file to this response; please confirm arrival

I believe most of the information can be found in the OrnatrixMaya.log - here is some supporting detail:
OS - Windows 10.0.14393
Maya - 2019.2 / 2019.3.1 (we upgraded our version internally from the time the original post was made)

Hello,

Sorry, I forgot to update you about the conclusion of this task.

This issue cannot be reproduced on Windows.

On Mac it does crash but Maya crashes even if there is not Ornatrix in the scene(Just with a sphere), so we think it is not related to Ornatrix.

Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)

Unrelated to ornatrix if you have many CPU cores.  i have playblast crashes on my 32 core Ryzen - autodesk knows about this

Thank you for the extra info!
