nHair with Maya

Hi,
I've just joined a studio where they are using Ornatrix, but running into some issues.

First off, Ornatrix has some really cool features I haven't found in hair software proprietary or otherwise, but I am definitely confused as to proper workflow.

We have a variety of characters where the Nucleus solver method should work great, but with some longer hair characters I wanted to test nHair.
I copied the curves, simmed the hair, but then trying to reapply that to Ornatrix groom is where I am lost.

I thought adopt external guides sounded right, but couldn't get the curves turned into guides (missing something I am sure), so I saw a forum post where someone mentioned anim cache operator. Cool! So I created one, point to my alembic, and at least I now have some moving hair.

Problem is the hair is an odd shape, not what my curves are doing, and when the character moves, the curves stay in place.

Is anim cache operator best way to apply an nHair simulation? If not, which is? And if it is, what could I be missing?
I am happy to do my own digging, but so far Youtube and Googling has not helped me out so much.

Thanks!
Dax

Hello Dax,

Check out the tutorial on this page: https://ephere.com/plugins/autodesk/maya/ornatrix/docs/2/Simulation_with_nCloth.html

Let me know if this is helpful.

About External Guides, when using external guides to move the hair from a hair object, you are basically using a hair object to move another. Sounds like your issue is double transforms. In this case, make sure that both hair objects are under the same transform. When creating a hair object, Ornatrix will located it under the transform node of the object where you are generating the hair (under the transform of your character, distribution mesh or scalp), be sure both hair object are under the same transform.

Hi Jeordanis,

Thank you for the tutorial! That part of Ornatrix is working really well. What I am missing is how to bring back or connect my nHair (curves) cache back into Ornatrix.
There are some characters that the cloth strip method might not work, so wanted to try nHair for the longer hair characters.

Is anim cache operator the way to do this? If so, what should I be looking at to see why the curves are fine, but the groom..changes for lack of a better word.

Also, I have to say the oscillator is very, very cool!

Thanks,
Dax

Hi again,

I have not had much luck finding this information in the docs or searching the web. Is the anim cache operator the way we are 'supposed' to feed our simulation from nHair back into Ornatrix? For one of our characters I do not see a way around simming with that, but so far the results piping it back in have been pretty bad.

And on a side note, I was made aware that the preview hair often disappears while the groomers are grooming, and can only see curves. I'm not sure if that's a known issue with an easy fix, if not I'm sure we'll make a ticket or reach out further.

Thanks!
Dax

Actually it is shown in the tutorial. You have to use Guides From Guide Mesh operator.

The tutorial on dealing with importing simulations from other solvers is on the page under simming with nCloth? Not super intuitive.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
