rigging strand based feathers

hi , im trying to figure out if its possible to rig feathers built with the propagation method.

i have a bird wing setup useing textured geo for the feathers. each feather on the wing is skinned to 4 joints so it can bend and twist via a control rig which the animators will use.

it would be great to replace the geo feathers with ox strand feathers and have them driven by the animation rig in the same way

i'd love to hear what the best approach might be for this

Hi,

The only way I can think that this can be done is if you generate the propagation strands using a Maya curve:

  1. Create a Maya Curve
  2. Convert it the Ox guides using Guides from Curves preset
  3. Add Propagation and create your feather
  4. Now you can rig the Maya curve and the feather will follow.

Otherwise, Ox strands/guides cannot be rigged directly because they are not native Maya objects. I hope this helps.

yes , now i have something that might work using a similar method. the problem is controling the twist along the length but i think i can link a attribut to the global angle of a rotate node. that will only work with a single feather however,  is there a way to solve that problem if i were useing many curves to generate guides?  to be able to twist each one seperatly?
