Hi everyone I'm running onto this error on my model everytime I try and groom some hair guides and I can't work out what the problem is. Does anybody have any ideas? The goorm tool grooms the hair guide, but as soon as I stop using the tool, the guides go back to their default position and I get the error I mention in the title. Many thanks Geoff |
Hi geoff, Do you get this error grooming in a new scene also? And, can you provide an scene where I can reproduce it? Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
Hi Logikoma Thanks for the reply. I can't send the scene on I'm afraid, NDA issues. I can't reproduce it on a new scene, just the one I'm working on.
Hi Geoff, I can't reproduce it either. i believe it can be something related to the scene you are working on. If you find any new information please let me know. Best Regards, Jeordanis F. Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
Hi again Logikoma So it seems to happen with guides that I have planted myself, which suggests somehow Ornatrix isn't treating planted guides in the same fashion somehow. I've just had it come up again with a new model I'm working on, wihch had all its history deleted and was purposefully cleaned so as to rule out issues with mesh or surface anomalies. Hope this helps and thanks a lot. I'm using Maya 2017 but also have experienced the same error in 2016.

Hi, I just tried using planted guides with all the brushes in the EditGuides node, Maya 2016 and 2017, but I can't reproduce it yet. Can you try using the latest build? Can you reproduce the error with a sphere and share it here? Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
Hi again Logikoma So I think I have got to the cause of the problem. I had a saved custom groom that I was using to get started with my characters and something in that was causing the problem. In fact it was the casue also of very much reduced performance (especially when the GuidesFromMesh node was selected, there is a longer wait for the attribute editor to propogate which gets much worse with larger guide counts), which I'm glad to say has cleared up now that I'm not using that particular groom anymore. Thanks again for your interest & help. I'm attaching the offending groom file for anybody who's interested....It would be nice to know what it is that was cuasing the slowdowns and errors so that I can avoid them in future.
Thank you very much for the file, Geoff! I will take a look. Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
OK, so I have run into this problem again which I can reproduce on my 2 different systems with the same process. To reproduce it, these are my steps. 1) Create a sphere 2) scale it up a bit in the scene 3) delete history 4) add Ornatrix and the Fur ball Groom setting 5) In the guides from Mesh node, set the number of guides to 5000 or so 6) Switch to edit guides shape 7) Select the brush mode in the edit guides panel and the Brush tool in the brushes panel 8) try and groom the guides. My experience is that they appear to be influenced by the brush, there's a pause in the system and then the guides snap back to their default position and the error I reported in the title of this thread comes up. Maybe this is user error, but I'd really appreciate some help or clarification on what is happening here. This seems to be a new problem I hadn't run into before I started this thread.
Hi Geoff, I was able to reproduce this issue and we will look into it asap. Thank you for the report. :) Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)
Hi Logikoma Great, glad you could reporoduce it and it's being looked into! Happy to help.
Also: A work around for this issue is to set the ammount of guides you want (eg 5000) and save the groom. Then you can add it to the object you're working on and there's no error. From my novice viewpoint, it seems Ornatrix isn't updating the guides list internally somewhere after initialization.
Hi Geoff, This issue has been solved in the last nightly build, I think. Try it out. Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)

Sorry to report that I still run into this issue with build 1.3.9353, I've just repeated the process I detailed in an earlier post and got the same results again :-(
Working on this as we speak. We had to revert the earlier fix due to some problems it introduced. Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)
Should be fixed in next nightly (9383+) Marsel Khadiyev (Software Developer, EPHERE Inc.)
