I don't have much knowledge about rigging but maybe i can use an external mesh with the curves wrapped to it, then rig that mesh. I think you can find more help on your Ornatrix Maya user Group on Facebook.
I am currently working on a short with a character that I have to simulate her hair for every scene. I can give you some tips. First off, if you are using an animated rig use a wrap deformer (parent constraint doesn't work well with Hair from Curves). If you are using your curves to generate your hair stack than make sure that set rotation is unchecked under the groundStrands node and hairFrom Guides remeber root position is checked. The way my workflow is I have the scalp and the guide curves as an alembic and built my hair system your that. This allows me to switch out the alembic (in the Maya ASCII file) for each scene while maintaining the same hair groom. Good Luck!!!
