Kiwi Bird - Approach guidance for transparent feathers

Hi there.
I am trying to recreate this look with Ornatrix.
I am using Redshift to render.

I have already made 3 systems:

A - The Bulk of the back feathers
B - FUR filling out the volume under the Bulk of the feathers
C - Head groom
D - Whiskers

I found that when I apply a moderately realistic texture to the bulky feathers I need underlying FUR to bulk it out. If I don't use Fur, the feather's become transparent when looking at the bird from behind. This makes sense, as redshift is limited to 16 traces of refraction.

Using fur underneath the feathers isn't an ideal approach as the seperate groom isn't identical and bits of Fur stick in and out at places. Also when I get around to trying dynamics on the guides, the FUR is completely seperate.

I am thinking of doing it over from scratch using this method:

> Guides to curve to give me better control over the groom (personal pereference, I dislike grooming tools)
> Guides to control length completely (instead of combining groom and texture currently)
> One system to produce all Feather mapped shaped cards, realistically mapped with fine transparencies
> Fur using the same groom to fill out transparency issues with realistic transparencies and trace depth issues.

Is there a good way to branch the same groom into a mesh from guides and also a hair from guides?
Thanks
