Thanks for the suggestions. I have been moving toward operating as you suggest, naturally, to avoid problems. I can avoid the glitches a bit more and make some progress.

I watched your video and was able to do the same on a simple sphere and with two furballs on overlapping sets of faces. All seemed fine. Maybe something with how I set up the stacks on the cat model (I have attached it in case you want to have a peek).

I recently changed from working on Maya for three years to c4d because of stability issues with Maya and third-party plugins. C4d has been very stable and useful, except for this Ornatrix issue.

BTW, I tried using the native c4d Hair system and found it limited and also compute intensive.

If I get c4d to crash again when using the Ornatrix stack I will upload the c4d crash log.

Just a quick check. Do you have Redshift installed in c4d? I do.

Greg

Also, I have my width set to .01.

AND, for each Furball I have checked (in 'Display Tag') 'Force Render Mode Evaluation' and 'Display Strand Count Fraction'. These were suggested by the Redshift community to be able to have a low hair count in the viewport but have the full hair count in the render. Redshift doesn't seem to input the display precentage for the hair but simply renders what is in the viewport, that is, without these two checked. I can still make th eproblem occur without them checked but they do seem to add to the stack recompute time. I was happly experimenting with a shpere and all was good unti l checked them and the issue happened immediately.

Greg

Are you referring to the graphical glitch?

Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)

Yes.

I may have solved it. I went into System Preferences, Security&Privacy, Privacy, and gave c4d all the permissions I could. It was missing a few like Accessability, Full disk access, etc. Initial testing is good. With the simple sphere I cannot recreate the glitch.

Fingers-crossed.

Greg

No, that wasn't it. Glitch still happens. Not sure what I did the first time after changing the privacy settings to avoid it.

Greg

Things I have tried but that did *NOT* fix the glitch:

  • Reset SMC
  • Reset PRAM/VRAM
  • Stopped all other processes including anti-virus tools
  • Disconnected all external devices, BLE mouse and kbd, monitor, GPUs
  • Stopped Time Machine backup
  • Logged in as a Guest User
  • Removed all old unused apps
  • Used default display resolution instead of higher
  • Turned off file and printer sharing
  • Removed 3dconnexion Space Mouse Enterprise and stopped its software
  • Turned off Automatic Graphics Switching
  • Gave c4d all possible permissions
  • Turned off Siri
  • Turned off Dynamic Background image
  • Changed mouse speed
  • Changed keyboard repeat speed
  • Changed system language
  • Reinstalled c4d S24 after removing all references to it
  • Reinstalled Ornatric c4d after removing all Ornatrix related files (including Ornatrix Maya)
  • Without Redshift installed in c4d
  • With Standard renderer in c4d
  • Created a Feathers Groom instead of Furball
  • DIfferent and various layouts in c4d
  • Clicking the upper small dot, alongside of Furball in Object manager, to turn off/on the Furball instead of using the green check mark
  • With c4d in various modes (Live Select, Lasso Select, Move, etc.
  • On the model of a cat
  • Only the Guides From Mesh' modifier turned on in the stack, all other modifiers off (see below for what happens when *ALL* modifiers were off)

Things I did that did *NOT* cause the glitch:

  • Loaded a complex scene into c4d and tried everything to cause the glitch
  • Used Ornatrix for Maya and tried the same scenario as in c4d, all ok
  • Created all kinds of objects in c4d and orbited like crazy
  • Turned off (by green check mark to red x) all modifiers in the stack

I am out of options at this point. Any more ideas?

Greg

Could the problem be related to how I installed Ornatrix? It was kind of confusing at first but now I just download the pkg file and run the installer. I think I had to do something with directories.

Greg

I cleaned my system of *all* Ornatrix and Ephere folders and files (including a directory for the licensing server I had mistakenly installed when I first started). I even removed all Ornatrix and Ephere files and folders for Maya.

I reinstalled Ornatrix c4d. Problem still exists.

Note, that all I need to do to create the issue is start c4d, create a sphere, select Add Hair from the Ornatrix menu, Select Fur Ball, disable the Fur Ball in the object manager by clicking on the green check, re-enable the Fun ball by clicking on the red 'x', and trying to orbit in the viewport with Alt-LMB. Sometimes I may have to repeat the disable, re-enable, steps a couple of times but mostly only once will cause the issue.

Also, if I click on the upper small dot in the object manager next to the Fur ball twice to remove the hair and guides from the viewport then click again to show them I don't see the issue very often.. but it still can happen. The issue also happens, randomly, if I disable, re-enable modifiers in the stack.

Greg

Seems to be getting worse. If I simply open c4d and create a fur ball (no sphere first) then try to navigate in the viewport I cannot and have lost control. That's it. Just open c4d, create a furball, and I cannot navigate. As in all the cases c4d hangs for a little while (spinning rainbow) then the rest of c4d seems response but the viewport is glitched.

I cannot make any progress on my project.

Can I speak with support on a call?

Thanks,

Greg

Hi,

Could the problem be related to how I installed Ornatrix? It was kind of confusing at first but now I just download the pkg file and run the installer. I think I had to do something with directories.

I always recommend to use the automatic installers. The .zip archives are there for big studios that use deployment tools to install software on their network.

The issue also happens, randomly, if I disable, re-enable modifiers in the stack.

That is exactly what I have been trying on my computer, as you saw on my videos. I'm trying again here:

Also, if I click on the upper small dot in the object manager next to the Fur ball twice to remove the hair and guides from the viewport then click again to show them I don't see the issue very often.. but it still can happen. The issue also happens, randomly, if I disable, re-enable modifiers in the stack.

I tries that too.

What do you mean when you say you lost control? Do you mean that the viewport is frozen/stuck? I cannot reproduce that either. As you can see in my video.

Can I speak with support on a call?

I understand your frustration and I'm trying to help as much as I can. I can give you support on Skype or Zoom, however I don't see how that would make a difference because I can see and understand the problem that you are experiencing, is just not reproducible here. We are still discussing this issue internally, and we will even get Maxon devs involved if needed, but this is the type of issue that needs time to be found and fixed.

I just noticed that we have different GPU configurations. Mines are Radeon Pro 555X and Intel UHD Graphics 630.

Also, are you using the most recent build of Ornatrix? Is worth a try.

Jeordanis Figuereo (Product Designer. EPHERE Inc.)

I have been using the automatic installer since that first time.

The viewport does not respond to any navigation commands at all. When I try the image flickers. If I try to create a new scene the viewport doesn't change (although the new scene has started and I can see it in the 'Windows' pull-down menu) If I try to load a .c4d file again the viewport doesn't change but the file is loaded and I can see it in the 'Windows' pull-down menu. So, c4d seems to be mostly ok just the viewport is no responsive.

That we have different built-in GPUs could very well be the reason you cannot recreate.

I have been working with Marsel for the last few days and he has had me try a bunch of different operations to give him a better idea where in the code to look. One thing he asked me to do causes an immediate c4d crash so I submitted a support request to Maxon with all the details.

To cause the c4d crash all I need to do is:

Open c4d

Create a sphere

Add Hair

Select Furball and Create

In the Attribute Manager, for the DIsplay Tag', enable 'Viewport Mesh Strands' then quickly enable Viewport Lights.

Crash... with popup saying details are in /../.._bugreport, etc. Have to Force Quit c4d then.

All my GPUs are officially supported by c4d, even the external ones so I should get some results from Maxon.
