Warp Roots Modifier

Warp Roots is a specialized modifier that provides precise control over hair, fur, and feather root distribution. It allows you to interactively bunch together or spread apart root positions using an intuitive painting interface, which is particularly useful when modeling feathers or sparse fur patterns.

Parameters

A set of artist-friendly parameters allow quick control over hair distribution with minimal setup. These parameters can be driven by texture maps, Strand Groups, guide channels and mesh vertex colors.

  • Density
The primary control for warping root positions. Paint lighter values to bunch roots together and darker values to spread them apart.
  • Strength
Controls the intensity of the warping effect. Increase for more pronounced distribution changes.
  • Iterations
Number of Jacobi iterations used when solving the root distribution.
  • Resolution
Grid resolution used for the warping computation.

Workflow

  1. Add a Warp Roots modifier to your hair object
  2. Click the Create button next to the Density Channel option and choose the Paint Strands option - this creates an Edit Guides modifier for painting the density channel
  3. Make sure the painting (Edit Guides) is applied before Warp Roots in the evaluation order
  4. Paint lighter values where you want a denser hair distribution and darker values where you want it sparser
  5. Adjust the Strength parameter to control how pronounced the effect is
  6. Continue painting as needed - lighter values bunch roots together, darker values spread them apart
